I bought a new DeskJet 4252e printer to use with my MacBook; my laptop has the proper OS, etc. I was able to connect the printer to my home Wi-Fi network, and was able to start the process of setting up the printer. However, it will not finish the setup process. In the HP app, the "spinning wheel" just keeps going and going. I even let it run overnight, but it still won't finish the setup. I have tried removing the device from my HP account twice, restarted my laptop, moved both devices closer to my router, etc., but still no luck. I plan to contact HP support in the morning, if necessary, but I'm hoping someone on here might have a solution.

Hi @HopeRum,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

Thanks for explaining everything so clearly. I can imagine how frustrating it is to see that spinning wheel endlessly, especially after doing everything right. The HP DeskJet 4252e setup issue you're facing on macOS is often related to HP+ activationWeb Services, or account linking not completing properly.

Let’s walk through a few targeted steps to fix this:

1. Reset the Printer to Factory Defaults

This clears any stuck setup state:

  1. Turn on the printer.
  2. Press and hold the Wireless and Cancel buttons together for 5 seconds.
  3. Wait until the Wi-Fi light blinks blue. This means it’s in setup mode again.

2. Remove HP Smart App Cache (macOS)

Sometimes the app gets stuck due to cached data:

  1. Quit HP Smart.
  2. Open Finder > Go > Go to Folder.
  3. Enter: ~/Library/Application Support/HP Smart
  4. Delete the folder.
  5. Restart your Mac and reopen HP Smart.

3. Reinstall HP Smart App

4. Complete HP+ Activation

During setup:

  • Make sure you’re signed into your HP account.
  • Accept HP+ terms (even if you don’t use Instant Ink).
  • If prompted, enable Web Services.

⚠️ Skipping any of these steps will cause the setup to hang.

5. Try Setup from Another Device

If the macOS setup keeps failing:

  • Try setting up the printer using the HP Smart app on iOS or Android.
  • Once setup completes, the printer will work across all devices.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!

I followed all of the steps above, including trying to connect my Samsung G23 to the printer, but I just keep getting the "spinning wheel" after it connects to my home Wo-Fi.
