Got a legacy kext error after upgrading to MaOS 15.1. Followed steps in Alden4's reply to .Mossrock9.
Tried to download latest driver from HP Easy Setup; wouldn't install-says the model is not found. S/N is CN37FD4GHM. The support page says my printer is expired.
Are the only options 1) Don't install any more MacOS updates or 2) buy a new printer?

Hi @Rtpftguy,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It seems like the upgrade to macOS 15.1 is causing compatibility issues with your HP OfficeJet Pro 8600 Plus, specifically related to legacy kernel extensions (kext) that macOS now restricts.
Here are some options to try, beyond skipping MacOS updates or purchasing a new printer.
Check for Updated Drivers:
- Even though HP's support page might indicate your printer is "expired," they might still release software updates that support newer macOS versions. Visit the HP support website and search for your model (HP OfficeJet Pro 8600 Plus). You may find a more recent driver or a workaround for macOS 15.1.
- Download and install the HP Smart app from the Mac App Store (this app is designed to work with many newer HP printers on macOS). It might help you bypass the outdated driver.
Install Legacy Kexts:
- You might need to manually install or re-enable legacy kext drivers. Sometimes, macOS 15.1 can block older drivers, but you can try the following steps:
- Open System Preferences > Security & Privacy > General.
- Look for an option to allow or enable blocked kexts.
- After enabling, try reinstalling the drivers (if available).
Use AirPrint:
- If you can't get the printer to work through the HP driver, you may be able to use AirPrint, which is supported on many HP printers (including the OfficeJet Pro 8600 Plus). Check if your printer is connected to your Wi-Fi network and then try printing from macOS using AirPrint.
- Go to System Preferences > Printers & Scanners and check if the printer appears as an AirPrint device.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

Alden4,
Thank you for trying.
In order,
1. There are no updated drivers. I checked.
2. Have installed HP smart. Will have to see if it works after future MacOS updates.
3. Your directions are outdated for legacy kexts. System Preferences no longer exists. It's System Settings and there is no General under Privacy. A search for "kext", "kexts", and "legacy" returned no results.
4. Here's what Apple says about legacy kexts:
https://support.apple.com/en-us/120363
This MacBook does NOT have an Apple silicon chip, so the instructions to reducing the Startup Security Utility do not apply.
5. We are using wireless printing now. However, the question will be whether we will be able to after Apple disables the legacy kexts.
So, what happens if kexts are disabled? What are the consequences? Will the printer still work? Apple says that they notified developers in 2019 that this was coming! Why hasn't HP fixed legacy kexts on their end?
Also, I checked the HP website and spoke to a sales rep. No HP deskjet printer YET works with MacOS 15 or 15.1 Sequoia.
HP hasn't yet updated their drivers.
