I bought an HP Smart Tank 5107 and I cannot print in color; the color selection is unavailable.

Does anyone have a solution for this?

Thank you in advance.

Hi @CADW,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I understand you’re unable to print in color with your HP Smart Tank 5107 on your MacBook Air running macOS 26 (Tahoe) — the color option is greyed out/unavailable.
Let’s go through a few steps to fix this.

1. Verify Ink Installation

Make sure all color ink bottles (cyan, magenta, yellow) are properly installed and filled.

On the printer’s control panel or HP Smart app, check that the ink levels are detected.

If any color is showing empty or not recognized, the printer will default to black & white.

2. Check Printer Connection Type

Go to System Settings > Printers & Scanners on your Mac.

Make sure the printer is added as HP Smart Tank 5107 (AirPrint or Secure AirPrint) or the HP driver — not as a “Generic” printer.

If it shows as Generic PostScript or Generic PCL, remove it (select it and click “–”), then click “+” to re-add the printer.

AirPrint or the proper HP driver is required for full color support.

3. Update HP Smart App & macOS

Open the App Store and check for updates to HP Smart.

Check System Settings > General > Software Update and install the latest macOS 26 updates.

Outdated drivers often disable color printing options.

4. Check Print Settings When Printing

Open the document you want to print.

Go to File > Print.

From the Presets or Print Settings / Quality dropdown, make sure:

Color (not Black & White) is selected.

Paper type and quality settings are appropriate.

If the color option is still greyed out, it usually means the printer was installed with a basic/generic driver.

5. Reset Printing System (if needed)

Go to System Settings > Printers & Scanners.

Right-click (or Control-click) in the printer list and choose “Reset printing system…”.

Re-add the printer using the “+” button.

Prefer AirPrint or the HP-provided driver if it appears.

6. Test with HP Smart

Open HP Smart > choose your printer > Print Documents or Photos.

See if the color option appears there.

If it works in HP Smart but not in other apps, the issue is with the macOS print driver settings.

I hope this helps.
