The latest firmware for this printer dates back to 2015; It appears that newer security protocols are preventing the printer connection to the router(s), regardless of SSID. The passwords used are correct. Does anyone have any suggestions?

The printer does connect to older versions of WiFi routers without issue!

Suggested Steps to Resolve the Wi-Fi Connection Issue

1. Ensure 2.4GHz Band Is Enabled

This printer supports only the 2.4GHz wireless band. Many modern Netgear routers default to dual-band or prioritize 5GHz:

  • Log into your router’s admin panel (usually via 192.168.1.1 or routerlogin.net)
  • Confirm that the 2.4GHz band is enabled and broadcasting
  • Avoid using “Smart Connect” or band steering—these can confuse older devices

 

2. Adjust Security Protocol

Newer routers often use WPA3 or mixed WPA2/WPA3 modes, which are incompatible with older firmware:

  • Set the security mode to WPA2-Personal (AES) only
  • Avoid WPA3 or TKIP encryption

 

3. Simplify SSID and Password

  • Use a basic SSID name (no special characters or spaces)
  • Keep the Wi-Fi password under 32 characters and avoid symbols

 

4. Assign a Static IP (Optional)

If DHCP negotiation fails:

  • Reserve a static IP for the printer in your router’s DHCP settings
  • Manually assign that IP on the printer’s control panel under Network Settings > IPv4 Configuration

 

5. Use WPS Setup (if available)

If your Netgear router supports WPS:
