How do you start one of these printers and just enter an IP address into it? When I turn it on it's constantly nagging me to start HP smart and add it to the system. I have no intention of that or installing HP smart, this is a network printer in a trade counter environment with many computers printing to it. I just want to disconnect the old printer plug the new one in, enter the ip address and move on. It seams I have no way to remove the message to change any settings without installing smart print and then finding the printer on our multi site network?

Our system that sends prints to it is a bespoke dealer management system which has for years worked fine with M402 and M404 and P2055 printers setup in this way. How do I do this? there must be some combinations of buttons to start it without it requesting HP Smart setup

That printer model isn't for you.  4002dne requires a constant internet connection and HP Smart to be configured and set up for work. It's not plug and play like the older models.

So which printer is plug and play? without HP smart in the same size format that can have an IP address manually entered?

The ones that don't have an e in the commercial name 4002dne.

If you were satisfied with M402 then an M404 will serve you well too.
