Laser Jet Pro M255DW
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I am at my limit with this thing, I bought a HP Color LaserJet M255dw printer which advertises that it has Duplex printing, but I cannot get it to function.

It was set as "not installed" in devices and printers, so I set it to installed.
It was showing a driver error so I uninstalled the drivers, had to turn off print spooling in order to remove certain packages, deleted the HP folder with all of the drivers, wiped everything clean from my system and then reinstalled everything. Still doesn't work.

I went into the HP Smart app, checked printer settings, advanced settings and saw that duplex was turned off, so I turned it on but it still won't let me print duplex!

I have been at this computer for over 24 hours now trying to fix this, I started midday yesterday and it's already 5pm on the following day!

I really hope someone here knows something I don't.

I know someone will recommend this so I will say I have done this:

"1.) In Windows, search for and open Programs and features

2.) Select your HP Printer

3.) Select Uninstall

4.) In Windows, search for and open Devices and printers

5.) In the Devices and Printers windows look for your HP printer. If you see it listed right-click on it and choose `Delete' or `Remove Device'

6.) Open up the run command with the "Windows key + R" key combo.

7.) Type printui.exe /s and click Ok. (Note: there is a space in between "printui.exe" and "/s")

8.) Click on the "Drivers" tab

9.) Look for HP Printer driver. If you see it Click on it and click Remove at the bottom

10.) Select Ok

11.) Select Apply and Ok on the Print Server Properties windows

12.) Close Devices and Printers"

After reinstalling the drivers 8 times the printer now shows Automatic Duplexing as an option but when I click it, it still prints 2 pages instead of double sided.

If the machine itself has a problem then I'm running out of time to be able to return it, some help would be really appreciated.

I understand you are facing issues with duplex printing on your Laser Jet Pro M255DW.  I really appreciate your efforts in trying to resolve the issue.

Not to worry I will help you to get a resolution to resolve the issue.

To assist better:

  • What application are you trying to print from?
  • Have you installed the full feature driver?
  • Could you please share a picture of the printer settings on your PC?

While you respond to that, please follow the steps mentioned on this document.

Update the printer firmware:

  • Click here to download and install the latest printer firmware from your product

Check your paper size and type settings. On the printer if you have not changed the settings from any type and any size to the actual paper size and type, say A4 plain letter, the printer will not duplex. The printer will not try to duplex if it has not been told that the media that is loaded is suitable for duplexing.

I have tried printing from windows 10 standard print software (Right click -> print on file), I have tried printing from the HP Smart software, I have tried printing from Word and Photoshop. They all give me the option for automatic duplexing but won't actually do so.

Here are a couple screenshots of my printer settings:

When I go to print I make sure settings are lined up correctly, I know in the screenshot the paper type is set to "unspecified" but it always does that until I manually set it to the correct type.

The software should be fine as I have uninstalled and reinstalled it 8 times, it's the latest version.

The printer has an annoyingly low amount of options on the screen, the paper in the trays have been assigned to A4, and with the correct GSM Gloss paper type. Snnoyingly there's no settings that mention Duplexing on the machine itself which would have been helpful as I could have just used Wireless/USB to print the files if this was possible.

Likely the printer does not support duplexing on glossy paper as the slick surface is almost guaranteed to cause feeding issues when trying to duplex. You can test this by changing the paper type to plain and see if it will duplex. You are likely better off manually refeeding for glossy media anyway.
