LaserJet 400 M401dne
macOS 10.15 Catalina

My printer (HP LaserJet 400 M401dne) will not automatically "wake up" when trying to print from any iOS device or Mac. It connects and prints with out a problem if I turn off the printer and turn it back on. I have followed all of the troubleshooting steps that I can find and this continues to happen. The printer is on but it is asleep. It will print if I send it to print directly using the IP address, but not if it uses the Bonjour address. The longest I can set it to stay awake is 15 min so I don't have the option to leave it on/awake.  Apple support was not able to assist and directed me to HP. HP support said it's an Apple issue since it prints using the IP address. I'm literally going around in circles. 😞 I have also confirmed that IGMP proxy is enabled on my WiFi network and multicast is also enabled on my network. Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

Hi,

That means as I suspected, the problem only relies on the network, which does not transfer the Bonjour packets correctly.

Please consult your router service provider for any specific setting to change in the router setting if applicable, if there is any firmware known to resolve a such for the router, or any known issue.

As the problem only occurs through the router but does work as expected with the same macOS, the same Ethernet card, and network settings of the printer, that means that only the network is the cause.

Hi,

Please make sure that both the printer and the router latest firmware are installed.

For the printer, follow below utility from the Mac to update the latest firmware:

https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software13/FW_CPE_Commercial/Taishan_8A/HP_LaserJet_M401_Series_FW_Up...

For your router, please consult your router service provider to ensure the latest firmware is installed for the router too, and check if you may see any difference then.

And for the cause, I would rather suspect the network to cause a such, not the printer or the Mac, as standard TCP/IP communication does wake the printer, while Bonjour does not, I would suspect the network to cause a such.

Hi Shlomi,

Where did you find the utility to update it on the Mac. I was looking for that before. I had previously run the update using a windows machine...

As far as the router is concerned, I have checked the network information and everything appears to be working as expected, except only when the printer falls asleep.

Can you please advise?

Thanks,

Dave

Hi Dave,

The Firmware Update is listed in macOS 10.14 or earlier as officially supported, but works just fine on 10.15.

What is your router model and firmware version? getting the latest updates for your router would be the first thing to try...

Everything is fully up to date.

Please temporarily connect the printer to the Mac with an ethernet cable to bypass the network, allow it to sleep and try printing using the Bonjour queue.

Does it wake up the printer then?

please let me know the results.

Hi Shlomi -

Yes, it works if I connect an ethernet cable from the printer directly to the Mac and it will wake up the printer to print and still be visible via bonjour/AirPrint when the printer is asleep.

Thanks,

David
