LaserJet 4000N
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Here’s the situation: I have two HP 4000N printers that *used* to work flawlessly with various versions of Windows, including Win 10 LTSC, Win 10 Workstation, Win 10 x64, Server 2019, Server 2003, and all versions of XP and earlier.

Before updating, the printers would install without issues. After updating, they continued to work fine. The main issue now is that HP hasn’t kept up with supporting older equipment, and Microsoft hasn’t either. After a forced OS reinstall due to a corrupt drive (caused by an unusual power failure), I can no longer get the printer to install on Win 10 Workstation. Keep in mind, Win 10 Workstation is *not* the general version of Windows 10—it’s specifically designed for systems with 20+ cores.

These printers use HP Printserver network cards, and even though I’m manually assigning the IP address, the system still fails to recognize the network card.

This printer is a workhorse and for the past 10 years has only needed paper pickup rollers and gets annual PM's.

I use this printer and cannot justify retiring a machine due to SOFTWARE ISSUES BY TRUSTED COMPANIES.

What version of Jet Direct card are you using? Some of the older models are simply unable to support newer security profiles and you may need to replace the card with a newer version such as the 620/635 series. Personally I do not find it reasonable to expect a 25 year old machine to be fully compatible with current standard, for the simple reason that standards have changed dramatically to address security issues.

With respect, the actual problem is Windows.  It refuses to install the driver for the 4100 PCL 5 OR the universal 4000N driver which has worked time and time again.  I can't begin to imagine the headaches with Win 11.

Workaround:  Put printer on Server 2019 and shared.  THAT works now.   Server is always on but not workstations.

Old working equipment such as this is no reason to toss it.  It does everything it used to do but at a reduced workload instead of thousands of pages per month.  Auto-Duplex, envelope feeder, 2 paper sizes - B/W and graphics are clear.

Complements the 2 color laserjets and the 1 inkjet - and the cost?  Toner is still available
