I am trying to use an HP LaserJet M428fdw printer/scanner via USB cable. Attempting to scan through HP Scan on the computer works fine. However, when I try to use the scan button on the printer screen it seems to work (no error messages) but nothing shows up on the computer. I select "Scan" -> "Computer" -> select my computer name -> use Scan shortcut "Save as PDF" and hit "Send". It displays "Preparing to scan...", then displays "Scanning...", and finally displays "File sent to computer <name>. Check the computer for more information." But nothing is on the computer. Any ideas how to get it to scan using the printer button (i.e. without having to use the HP Scan app)?

Referring to the user guide https://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c06184015.pdf
It would appear that the scan to computer requires the software to be loaded and running on the computer before you try to scan. If you want to scan directly from the computer you want to use the scan to folder option but I believe you need to be connected via network to use this function. Well worth it for the ease of scanning provided by the scan to network folder feature.

Thank you for the suggestion, but I have already tried what is listed in the manual for how to connect the scanner to the computer. The function is enabled and I have entered the file path where the file should end up. The software cannot already be running on the computer or the printer throws an error. I think the problem is that using the scan function directly from the printer is not triggering the opening of the software on the computer even though I have set the HP_BUTTON_PUSH_SCAN parameter to run the HP Scan app. The user (I am tech support) has told me that the function used to work and I am not sure what has changed.
I cannot use the options that require a network connection as that cannot be set up currently. I can only use the USB cable.
