HP LaserJet Pro MFP M125a

I'm having trouble updating my LaserJet Pro MFP M125a's firmware (USB connection only, no ethernet). I have downloaded the newest one which is the 20180208 and it is not updating my printer at all. I know it because when I long press the cancel button at least for 10 seconds it prints a Self Test / Configuration page, there it says that the printer is running the 20150826 firmware. The only reason I want to update is because I heard that the newer firmware supports third party cartridges, and my current one doesn't. And I'm running out of ink and I don't really wanna pay the full price of a first party cartridge, if the third party cartridge is as good as the first party cartridge. So, please help me. I have tried everything. I tried unzipping the firmware and installing it that way. I tried to run it as an admin. I tried many different fresh/old OS installations. Nothing worked. It just keeps saying that it is updating and then it says it is done. I've checked the firmware files and saw that there is a timeout delay set for 5 minutes, that must be the reason why it takes so long to install, I reduced it to 1 (ergo 1 minute instead of 5, just changed a value) sure, it finished faster but with the same result. And when I print the Self Test / Configuration page, it still says it is running the old firmware... What am I to do?
BTW I'm running windows 10 pro x64 and I have the newest drivers also installed.
Thanks for any kind of help in advance!

The fixes that you will get with the new firmware has nothing to do with third-party cartridges.

If you really want to run firmware upgrade I will recommend you to use a computer with Windows 7.

thanks for the speedy reply, I will try to get a pc with a win7 and attempt your suggestion.
how are you so sure that the fixes won't allow me to use third party cartridges? is there a changelog I could check out?
I have read this article maybe a year ago, and it read that printers made by HP are blocking third party cartridges and that in late 2017 or 2018 (I can't recall exactly) they released new firmware for some of there printers that allowed the use of third party cartridges. I was just wondering if my printer is one of them or not...

You can read it on the download page, there is a section fixes for the firmware version you are downloading.

Fixes of the firmware:
"Fixed an issue where the HP Toner Cartridge Authentication program cannot verify the cartridge, or falsely reports non-Genuine cartridges that were manufactured since 2016."
huh... okay.
Well thank you for everything, I will try the windows 7 idea, you had. And perhaps report back... I don't know when that will be though.
Do you perhaps know why the update doesn't work on windows 10?
