LaserJet Tank 2504
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

The HP LaserJet Tank 2504dw uses PCLmS.

The HP Smart Universal Printing Driver v4 (3.02.2.2316) says it supports PCLmS (HP Universal Print Driver (UPD) Release Notes).

The SUP driver does not seem to work for this printer though (Test Print doesn't print anything. Opening Printer Preferences on a client PC generates a "Failed to retrieve Device Capabilities" error).

Any idea if there is a way to get this to work or if support is planned in the future?

Hi @SATMike,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I'm sorry to hear that you're experiencing issues with your HP LaserJet Tank 2504 printer. The error message you mentioned, "Failed to retrieve Device Capabilities," indicates that there might be a problem with the printer driver or the connection between the printer and the client PC. Here are a few troubleshooting steps you can try.

  • Verify the connection: Ensure that the printer is properly connected to the client PC. Check the USB cable or network connection, depending on how the printer is connected. Try disconnecting and reconnecting the cable or restarting the network connection.
  • Restart the printer and PC: Turn off the printer and the client PC, then wait for a few seconds before turning them back on. Sometimes a simple restart can resolve temporary glitches.
  • Update the printer driver: Visit the official HP website and search for the latest driver for your HP LaserJet Tank 2504 printer. Download and install the updated driver on the client PC, following the instructions provided by HP. Make sure you select the correct driver for your operating system.
  • Remove and reinstall the printer: On the client PC, go to "Devices and Printers" (Windows) or "Printers & Scanners" (Mac). Locate your HP LaserJet Tank 2504 printer and remove it from the list. Then, reinstall the printer by clicking on "Add a printer" and following the on-screen instructions.
  • Try a different USB port or network connection: If you're using a USB connection, try connecting the printer to a different USB port on your PC. If you're using a network connection, check the network settings and ensure that the printer is connected to the correct network.
  • Disable firewall or antivirus: Temporarily disable any firewall or antivirus software on the client PC and check if it resolves the issue. Sometimes, these security programs can interfere with printer communication.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Thanks for the reply Alden, but I don't believe this is a communication issue.  If I switch to a printer driver other than the Smart Universal v4 driver, I can print and communicate with this printer as expected.

I believe this is an issue with the Smart Universal v4 driver not being compatible with the HP LaserJet Tank 2504dw even though both say they support PCLmS.

I was more trying to verify that the 2504 won't currently work with the SUPD v4 driver and find out if HP had plans to add compatibility in the future.
