Welcome to the HP Support Community!
The HP software and the I.R.I.S OCR (ReadIRIS) software must be completely uninstalled and removed of the system.
First download only this complete package: "HP Universal Scan - Full Feature Software and Driver ",
- File name: Full_Webpack-51.7.5628-SJ0001_Full_Webpack.exe (410.8 MB) <<< this download takes a little longer,
with integrated HP OCR Imaging Library
Then proceed as follows:
Check the system for
- TuneUp`s
- Optimization Tools
- Cleanup Tools
disable them, better uninstall them. Next...
- Disconnect printer/scanner from computer- Disable WLAN, WiFi and/or remove the USB or LAN cable.- Do not switch off the printer >> unplug the power cord from the socket!
- right-click Start, search for "control panel" and open "Programs and Features"
uninstall all HP printer software > via "Programs and Features" - right-click Start, search for "control panel" and open "Devices and Printers"
In the "Devices and Printers" window look for your HP Printer. If you see it listed, right-click on it and choose "Delete" or "Remove Device.” - Restart the PC
- Close all programs
- Change File-Explorer-Settings:View > Options > "Change folder and search options" > Tab "View"
- enable > Show hidden files, folders and drives
- uncheck > Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)
- search for "HP [printer name]" and for [IdrsOCR_] delete all this folders
- Empty the TEMP folders
A) C:\Users\[Your user account]\AppData\Local\Temp\
B) C:\Windows\Temp\ system files cannot be deleted! - Reconnect the printer to the power supply and switch it on (if this does not happen automatically)
- Please note: WLAN has to be deactivated!
- Restart the PC
- Close all programs
- Open up the run command with the "Windows Key + R" key combo > in folder Downloads double-click on the Full_Webpack-51.7.5628-SJ0001_Full_Webpack.exe.
- The installation was completed successfully, now you must ...
- Restart the PC again
- Now the installation is complete.
Via USB, means wait until the installation asks to connect the printer/scanner.
Document error messages accurately, even better is to take a screenshot of it and upload here.
Important information:
- Change back the File Explorer settings -
- enable > Don`t show hidden files, folders or drives
- click button > Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)

I followed your steps and was able to install the scanner drivers. However, I still can't install the printer drivers. I get the same error.

repeat ... but I have changed the instructions for uninstalling and installing.
Also, another software must be downloaded, this is important!
First download only this complete package: "HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M281fdw/M281cdw Printer Full Software Solution ", into the download folder.

uninstall them. Next...
- you have to log in to Windows with admin rights
if not, reboot the system! - Disconnect printer/scanner from computer- Disable WLAN, WiFi and/or remove the USB or LAN cable.- Do not switch off the printer >> unplug the power cord from the socket!
- right-click Start, search for "control panel" and open "Programs and Features"
uninstall all HP printer software > via "Programs and Features" - right-click Start, search for "control panel" and open "Devices and Printers"
In the "Devices and Printers" window look for your HP Printer. If you see it listed, right-click on it and choose "Delete" or "Remove Device.” - Restart the PC
- Close all programs
- Change File-Explorer-Settings:View > Options > "Change folder and search options" > Tab "View"
- enable > Show hidden files, folders and drives
- uncheck > Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)
- search for "HP [printer name]" and delete all this folders.

C:\Users\All Users\HP\HP ColorLaserJet MFP M278-M281 Help - Empty the TEMP folders

- Note: Do not connect the USB cable until prompted by the installer. No WiFi and no WLAN/LAN
only USB! - The installation was completed successfully, now you must ...
- Restart the PC again
- Now the installation is complete.

After step-18, check now if this path and these files are present, see Message 4!
