I upgraded my old Laserjet Pro MFP M227fdw printer to a color printer, I removed the  driver but it's still a choice in the dropdown. this make me crazy, I print something and ten minutes later I go to my new printer only to find nothing after investigating it turns out my dropdown still has a choice of the old Laserjet Pro MFP M227fdw. How do I remove that choice from my dropdown. The drive is gone off the computer

Hi @flint118,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If you have removed the driver for your old HP LaserJet Pro MFP M227fdw printer but it still appears as a choice in the printer dropdown list, here are steps you can take to remove it completely:

Method 1: Remove Printer from Control Panel (Windows)

  • Click on the Start menu and type "Control Panel". Open it from the seach results.
  • In the Control Panel, click on Devices and Printers (or View devices and printers under Hardware and Sound).
  • Locate your old HP LaserJet Pro MFP M227fdw printer in the list of devices.
  • Right-click on it and choose Remove device or Delete.
  • Follow any prompts to confirm the removal of the printer from your system.
  • After removing the printer, restart your computer to ensure all changes take effect.

Method 2: Clear Print Spooler (Windows)

  • Press Win + R on your keyboard to open the Run dialog box.
  • Type services.msc and press Enter to open the Services window.
  • Scroll down and find Print Spooler in the list.
  • Right-click on Print Spooler and choose Stop.

Restart Print Spooler Service:

  • Go back to the Services window.
  • Right-click on Print Spooler and choose Start.
  • Return to the Devices and Printers window in Control Panel.
  • Right-click on the old printer and choose Remove device or Delete.

Method 3: Registry Cleanup (Advanced)

  • Press Win + R, type regedit, and press Enter to open the Registry Editor.
  • Before making any changes, it’s recommended to back up your registry. Click on File > Export, choose a location, and save the backup.

Navigate to Printer Entries:

  • In the Registry Editor, navigate to:
  • Look for entries related to your old printer (LaserJet Pro MFP M227fdw). Right-click on them and choose Delete.
  • Close the Registry Editor and restart your computer to apply the changes.

Method 4: HP Print and Scan Doctor (HP Devices):

  • HP provides a diagnostic tool called HP Print and Scan Doctor that can automatically resolve printer problems.
  • Download and run the tool from the HP Support website. It can help detect and remove old printer entries causing issues.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
