I bought a Laser printer M209DWE and plugged it in, expecting the usual routine to connect it to my wifi and then continue printing since my HP M12W simply stopped and the cartridge was blocked.
No way and no joy. HP wants to look at everything I print and dictate when I get new toner.
I don't need and I don't want yet another "account". I want a printer to print. Without supervision.
I started the setup procedure but skipped the parts with my personal information. It's a printer for crying out loud.
After a while it started printing anyway and the product number went from 209DWE to 209DW - without the E.
So instead of immediately returning the printer I though the problem was solved and I could use the printer.
But after 30 pages, HP stopped me and demanded a new toner cartridge. I could simply click here and for the price of the printer I could get a new cartridge.
I ordered one from Amazon. Which said it is compatible.
It slid right in - but the printer did not print.
Like a car manufacturer demanding you only use their own brand of expensive petrol, HP refuses to ptint with non-HP cartridges.
Now my print job is stuck in the queue and I can't get the print. I have printed around 20 error reports by pressing the blinking i-button, so I could easily have printed my 2 pages I need. Instead, HP is governing and controlling how and what I print.
Is there anyone who can help?
Is there anyone who can help getting my print job done without lecturing me on how to buy a different printer?
Which, by the way, I tried, but HP is going only one way and that is through total control.
If that's the way it stays and I can't use the printer I am returning it next week and will never touch HP again and make sure the company does the same.
If someone can point me to workable solution, thank you so much.

M209dwe is a HP+ printer and requires internet connection and user registration to work. It's limited to 30 pages without registration, after 30 pages you need to register it with your HP account, there is nothing wrong with the toner or with the printer you just need ( if you want to use it) register it's like 5 minute job.
Since you joined this forum you have already created an HP account you can use your credentials from this forum to register the printer.

You should have chosen the Non-E version of this printer.
I am a volunteer, offering my knowledge to support fellow users, I do not work for HP nor speak for HP.

When I was in the shop I was not told I can't use this printer.
The box does not warn customers about the limited capabilities and value of this printer.
I need a printer and not another company that spies on me. I need a printer that will print when I need to print something without a company checking what I print, when, how much and then sends we unsolicited spam to buy toner at the price of a printer.
It is unbelievably wasteful to produce a toner cartridge and limit its usage to 30 pages - without informing me on top of it.
But I am able to print over 100 pages of error messages that are printed - not displayed. That is an environmental disaster.
I do NOT require to provide anyone with "credentials" to print something. I do NOT need an "account" with HP to print something.
Sorry, but all you did is confirm the problem. It seems HP does not care about customers, just its own bottom line. Well, looks as though my company will have to follow my example and switch to a different supplier when it comes to renewing the printing contract.

As I said, it identifies as 209DW.

This is asinine. But if HP does not care about customers I will switch not just my personal printer to an alternative.

You bought a printer that requires an internet connection and a user account but you weren't informed properly by the seller/shop. Whose fault is that HP or the seller or both?
You had an option to buy a printer that doesn't require anything. HP provided you with two options, you choose the one you now don't like.

Yes, I squarely blame HP. It is ridiculous how little they care about their customers and only want one thing: money. More and more money.
If they can't provide a printer that prints, then leave the market.
Selling a product that the buyer can't use is not a great idea, especially since they don't put warning signs on the box.
Requiring credentials to print a page is preposterous and I reject it - as I hope everyone with a brain will do.
I took the printer back to Saturn and informed the manager of what was going on and he will bring this up and consider not selling HP printers if they are so greedy and difficult. He was not made aware of these restrictions and sold them as he does every printer. As a printer.
What HP is doing is outright shameful.
