I am having an issue installing my M252dw that I just ordered a couple weeks ago.  When the installation is "99%" complete, an error message pops up that reads something like "An installation process took too long. This is a fatal error that prevents product use."

As for specifics to my own situation, I have Windows 7, was using the disk sent with the product, was not setting up wireless (it's for home use, so it'll be direct USB), followed all the instructions about 5 different times with the same error message each time.  Basically all the troubleshooting advice I found hinted that the disk might be defective, but I don't think this could be the problem because I also tried abandoning the disk and installing the software online, unsuccessfully, because I got a message that all the software is already installed.

SOLUTION

Well, everyone,  I just got my printer to work, against the odds, seemingly.  Here's what worked:

1).  I abandoned USB connection and set up wireless through my printer touchscreen (specifically meaning, I found my wireless network in the list and typed in my passphrase).  I don't actually know if that was a necessary step.

2).  I went onto the HP site, searched under "Support" > "Software and Drivers" > "M252dw", which pulled up the appropriate software downloads screen (see image below).  I had unsuccessfully tried installing the software from 1). The disk that came with the M252dw, 2). The "HP Color LaserJet Pro M252 Printer series Full Software and PCL 6 Driver" under "Driver-Product Installation Software" drop-down menu, 3). Using the "Windows Built-in Solution" where you "Add a printer" from Windows "Printers and Devices", 4). Searched for an alternative driver that an HP employee said should work (there are no available downloads for the printer suggested, the Deskjet 990c).

So, I looked at the list of drivers I could download and noticed in the list (again, see image below) PCL5, PCL6, and Postscript options under the "Driver-Universal Print Driver" drop-down menu.  I decided Postscript sounded promising and downloaded it, selecting to NOT use the HP Installer but rather "Download only".  It worked.  It successfully sent a test page to my printer and I also just printed a document from MSOffice.

Hope the "Postscript" driver works for you!

@aDogD, welcome to HP Forums, this is a great place to get support, find answers and tips.
Thank you for posting your query, I'll be more than glad to help you out.

I understand that you are unable to install the software of your HP Color LaserJet Pro M252dw as it stops at 99%.

This issue could occur if there are conflicts with the windows 7 operating system programs or the firmware is not updated.

Don't worry as I have a few steps that should help fix this issue.

Please install the basic software from the link: HP LaserJet Pro M252 Printer series PCL 6 Printer Driver

Also, update the firmware from the link: Firmware Update Utility

Let me know how that works.

I hope you have a good day ahead.

Hello!

I tried to download both the driver and the firmware update (unsuccessfully; couldn't install them properly) and still I cannot use my printer.  It shows up in my devices, but under "Unspecified" rather than "Printers".

When I tried to download the driver, I got the same error as in my original post.

Here is a screenshot to help you figure out how to help me:

In this image, the printer was not listed in the drop-down box of printers to update, so I couldn't even download any firmware.

Hello again,

The image in the above message was actually what happened when I tried following the directions from this site: http://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c01796879 (manually adding a printer)

The following image is the error that occurred when I tried to download the driver:

This also occurs when I attempt to download the driver, which is the same error as my original post:
