What is the specific file that is needed on the USB boot disk to reset a M281fdw MFP  ?    

The printer driver page has only the following EXE file under the FIRMWARE section.  I put that file on the root directory of a USB FAT32, but it didn't seem to complete the install.    I used the lower-left touch-panel hard-reset to initiate the install as mentioned on other comments.   It seemed to start the reinstall, but it didn't finish, and so the printer has gone back into it's error 49 boot loop.

Not possible, the M281 doesn't support USB firmware.  You can use .exe from the computer, but the printer must be in a Ready state.

Thanks.  If the printer won't go into a ready state, what are my options ? 

 

I tried holding the lower-left of the touch-panel to do a hard-reset.  That got me to pick language, but then it cycled back to the Error 49.
