Hi @Supmark,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

Disabling automatic firmware updates on printers can vary depending on the brand and model. Typically, this option is found within the printer's settings or administration interface. Since you're unable to locate it in the web page menu, here are a few steps you can take to try to disable automatic firmware updates.

  • Check the User Manual: Sometimes, the process of disabling automatic updates is outlined in the user manual that came with your printer. Look for a section on firmware updates or settings.
  • Firewall or Router Settings: If the printer connects to your network, you might be able to block the printer's access to the internet for firmware updates by configuring your router or firewall settings. This method may prevent other network functionality as well, so be cautious.
  • Check for Hidden Menus: Sometimes, printer settings, including options like disabling automatic updates, may be hidden in advanced or service menus. Accessing these menus often requires specific key combinations or sequences. However, tampering with hidden menus can potentially cause unintended issues with your printer.

Before attempting any of these steps, it's important to consider the potential risks and consequences. Firmware updates often include security patches and bug fixes, so disabling them could leave your printer vulnerable to issues or security threats.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Hi Alden!

Thank you for your answer. I have looked at the online manual (no paper manual comes with the printer) and I have searched on all the menus I have found but really I can’t find how to disable the automatic firmware update.
The exact model of my printer is Color Laser MFP 179fnw. Could you help me for this exact model? I hope that as an HP support agent you can help me with instructions for my model, not only with general suggestions.
I’m waiting for you again!

thanks

Hi @Supmark,

Thank you for your response,

HP printers typically do not provide an option to disable automatic firmware updates through the printer's control panel or menu settings. However, you might be able to control firmware updates through the HP Smart app or HP Printer Software on your computer.

Here's how you can potentially disable automatic firmware updates using the HP Smart app or HP Printer Software:

HP Smart App (Mobile):

  • Open the HP Smart app on your mobile device.
  • Select your printer.
  • Look for an option related to "Settings" or "Printer Preferences."
  • There might be an option to manage firmware updates or notifications. Check if there's an option to disable automatic updates.

HP Printer Software (Computer):

  • Open the HP Printer Software on your computer.
  • Select your printer.
  • Navigate through the settings menu. Look for options related to "Preferences" or "Tools."
  • Check for firmware update settings. There might be an option to disable automatic updates.

If you cannot find an option to disable automatic firmware updates through these methods, it's possible that HP does not provide a user-accessible way to disable them.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Hi!

Thanks again. But really I can’t find any way to disable the firmware update. I’m so disappointed. I think that it’s not correct that HP use my internet connection to update MY printer without asking me nothing. If you don’t have any other solutions I can only assume that there’s no solution or you don’t know one.

thank you for your help
