Problem Description:
Our printer M234dwe consistently displays the error "Er 80", even when an original cartridge is installed. The printer blocks all print jobs, including test pages printed directly from the device.

Observations:

Cartridge status is reported as faulty despite the original cartridge being installed (Eventlog: 10.7000).

Network connectivity (LAN & WLAN) is functioning correctly and the printer can be added and reached over the network.

Test prints directly from the device do not work.

The printer has received a firmware update (Firmware Datecode: 20250324), and a full reset to factory settings has been performed.

Actions Taken:

Removed and reinstalled the cartridge, ensuring proper seating.

Powered off the printer completely for several minutes and restarted.

Performed a factory reset of the printer.

Reapplied the latest firmware update.

Verified network connectivity (LAN and WLAN).

Attempted test prints directly from the printer.

Current Status:

Error M234dwe / Error 80 persists.

Printer remains blocked from printing.

Event-Log

Entry #CodePageDescription
110.70000Printing with Black Cartridge past very low.

Warranty
The device was replaced under warranty. We used another device while it was being repaired. Then, when the repaired device arrived, we simply continued to use the old one. Now I wanted to use the new device and I get an error message. The warranty expired in July 2024. Would it make sense to invoke the warranty?
If the serial number is needed to verify the facts, I can send it to you.

@DeoHeo, Welcome to HP Support Community,

Thank you for posting your query; I’m here to help by guiding you through steps to resolve this issue

It sounds like you’ve already taken several steps to troubleshoot this Er 80 error on the HP M234dwe printer, and the issue persists despite the factory reset, firmware update, and cartridge reseating. The "Er 80" error on HP printers is often associated with a cartridge or printhead issue, and the error message “Printing with Black Cartridge past very low” in the Event-Log may provide a clue.

Here are some troubleshooting steps you can try to resolve this:

Check for Printhead or Cartridge Issues

The error message in the Event Log ("Printing with Black Cartridge past very low") can be a sign of issues with the cartridge, but also potentially with the printhead or sensor.

Replace the cartridge with a known working one (if you haven’t already done so).

Ensure the contacts on the cartridge (the metal terminals) and the printer’s contacts are clean. Use a soft lint-free cloth and gently wipe them.

Check for damage to the printhead (if applicable). If you’ve tried multiple new cartridges and the error persists, it’s possible that the printhead itself is damaged, especially if there are any signs of leaks, smudging, or physical damage.

Ensure Correct Cartridge Type is Installed

Confirm that you are using the correct, genuine HP cartridge for this model. Sometimes, third-party or non-HP cartridges can trigger errors, even if they appear to be functioning normally.

Also, double-check if the cartridge is the correct model number for the M234dwe.

Update Printer Firmware (Update the firmware on an HP printer | HP® Support)

  • Go to the HP Customer Support - Software and Driver Downloads page. Enter your printer model number and search for the latest firmware update. Follow the instructions to download and install the firmware update.

Examine Network Connectivity (If Related)

Since your printer’s network connectivity (LAN and WLAN) is working properly, make sure there are no conflicting settings or network issues causing this error. Check that the printer is connected to the correct network and there’s no network-related problem, especially if it's trying to print over a network rather than from the local printer interface.

You might also want to reset the network settings (on the printer) to ensure there is no conflict there.

I hope this helps.

Please feel free to reply here if you have any questions or if you need further clarification on any of the steps.

Take care and have a good day.
