My printer is connected wireless and to get the firmware program to work I had to delete the existing printer from my laptop, reinstall printer with a printer/USB cable and then rn the software. UI then reverted back to wireless printing.

yes--i also have all HP ink and the firmware update also still bricked my printer, just that I get a 79 Service Error instead of the Supply Error the others are getting. It's the firmware no matter what. So frustrating with HP but thankful others here had the solution linked.

I did do this wirelessly... and I was able to find the printer HOWEVER it was pretty touch and go. With the "new-problematic" firmware loaded the printer is not always reachable so I had to restart both the firmware update and the printer a half dozen times.

scroll to the system / set up you have and choose the 20200612 version. Then just keep restarting the printer and the firmware updater until it gets all the way through the upload.

I honestly don't know how. I found it here: https://driver-hp.net/hp-color-laserjet-pro-m280-m281-driver/

I rolled back from 20201021 to 20200612 and my printer now works again.
The firmware program is 34meg so too large to email, but can be downloaded from this FTP link – available for 7 days before auto deleted.

Thanks!!! This worked for me. I had to run the firmware update twice, but I am now back in business. It is important to prepare the printer by enabling downgrades and upgrades in the Setup/Service/Laserjet upgrades menu on the printer. After successfully changing the firmware to 20200612, then go back in and disable upgrades so they can't do this to you again!!!
