Hi @CCURL

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It seems like your HP Deskjet 4635 is showing an error code related to a hardware or firmware issue:

  • 0x007C9C98 and 0xB80003E0 are likely hardware failure codes that can occur for various reasons, such as issues with the printer's firmware, printhead, mechanical parts, or power supply.

Here are some troubleshooting steps to try and resolve the issue:

Step 1: Perform a Power Cycle (Hard Reset)

Sometimes, a hard reset can help clear out errors like these and get the printer back to normal.

  1. Turn off the printer using the power button.
  2. Unplug the printer from the power source.
  3. Wait for at least 30 seconds.
  4. Plug the printer back in and turn it on.

This will reset the printer and might clear the error code.

Step 2: Check for Paper Jams or Obstructions

A paper jam or some sort of obstruction in the printer's internal mechanisms can cause hardware-related error codes.

  1. Turn off the printer and unplug it.
  2. Open the printer and carefully check for any paper jams or objects inside, especially in the paper tray or carriage path.
  3. Remove any visible obstructions, and be careful not to damage any internal components.
  4. Close the printer and turn it back on.

Step 3: Reset Printer Settings (Restore Factory Defaults)

Restoring the printer to factory settings can help resolve persistent firmware issues.

  1. Turn on the printer.
  2. On the printer's control panel, navigate to the Setup or Settings menu.
  3. Look for an option like Restore Defaults, Factory Reset, or Reset All Settings.
  4. Follow the on-screen prompts to perform the reset.

If you're unable to navigate the menu due to the error code, try resetting the printer using the physical buttons (this may vary by model).

Step 4: Update or Reinstall Printer Firmware

An issue with the printer's firmware can sometimes lead to these hardware-related error codes.

Visit the HP Support website: Go to HP's support site for the Deskjet 4635 and look for the latest firmware updates for your printer model.

Download and install the firmware: Follow the on-screen instructions to update the printer’s firmware. If the printer isn't responding, you may need to do this through the HP Smart app or HP Print and Scan Doctor (a diagnostic tool from HP).

Step 5: Check Printhead and Ink Cartridges

The printhead or ink cartridges could also be causing the issue. A malfunctioning printhead or a defective ink cartridge can cause error codes like this.

  1. Turn off the printer and unplug it.
  2. Open the printer's cartridge access area.
  3. Remove the ink cartridges carefully.
  4. Inspect the printhead for any ink blockages, smudges, or visible damage.
  5. Clean the printhead gently with a lint-free cloth and some distilled water or printer-safe cleaning solution.
  6. Reinstall the ink cartridges and turn the printer back on.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
