Due to the recent "ripple20" vulnerability, I want to update the firmware of my M118 LaserJet printer. When starting the macOS 10.14 HP Firmware Updater it fails to find any printer. None are displayed automatically in the list, and when choosing IP address it says "Device is not reachable". The printer is connected with an Ethernet cable. It works perfectly fine for printing. The printer's website for configuration works fine. I tried installing the HP Easy Start software, but didn't make a difference.
I tried this on both an old mac with macOS 10.14 (matching version of firmware updater) and macOS 10.15 (for some reason doesn't have a firmware updater so used the previous version software), the latter also with USB cable attached to the printer. Support site seems to make vague claims of software/firmware updates via the iOS "HP Smart" app, but didn't find any option in the menus for that.

@StefanLa, Welcome to HP Support Community!
Could you perform a ping test using the Mac Network Utility and let me know the results? Use the printer IP address to perform a ping test, the printer IP can be located by selecting the wireless icon on the printer display.
Do you have any internet security software installed on the computer? Disable it.
Also, check this-
Here is the link to the User Guide- http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c05176850 which has steps to help you with the FW update.

Hello @TEJ1602 ! Ping works fine by IP address, receive responses from the printer. Eventually I fetched my old Windows laptop from the attic which successfully updated the firmware through the windows version of the firmware updater tool. I do have Little Snitch installed on one of the Macs, but disabling it doesn't help.
(after updating the printer firmware through the windows firmware update tool, the mac version still doesn't find the printer and still claims "device not reachable" when trying by IP address)
