HP OfficeJet Pro 8720 All-in-One Printer

When I clicked to open the HP Smart app on my desktop I get the message that I need to Enable Local Network permission for the HP app. . . . you must enable Local Network permissions and restart the app. When I click on Open permissions HP Smart is listed and already enabled. I have tried turning it off and on several times (with the shutdown of both the app and restarting of the computer) with no change. This is on an Office Jet 8720 which is no longer supported on the HP site. What am I missing?

Hi @JLL-1509,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I can imagine how frustrating it must be to see the HP Smart app asking for permissions that are already enabled, especially when you're just trying to get your OfficeJet Pro 8720 to work. You're not alone in this, and I’m here to help you through it.

Even though the Local Network permission is enabled, macOS sometimes doesn't register it correctly due to app cache or system-level glitches. Here's a step-by-step guide to help:

Step 1: Fully Reset HP Smart App Permissions

  1. Go to System SettingsPrivacy & SecurityLocal Network.
  2. Turn OFF HP Smart.
  3. Restart your Mac.
  4. Go back to Local Network, and Turn ON HP Smart again.
  5. Launch the HP Smart app.

Step 2: Update HP App

Please update to the HP APP, which resolves permission and scan saving issues. 👉 HP App – For HP Printers, Laptops, and Tech Accessories | HP® Official Site

Step 3: Reinstall the HP App

If the issue persists:

  • Delete the HP app.
  • Restart your Mac.
  • Reinstall from the Mac App Store.

Hi VikramTheGreat,

Thanks so much for the time that you put into trying to solve my problem. Alas, it didn’t solve the problem. I followed Step 1 and when I went to #5 of Step 1 the app ran but again gave me the message that I needed to Enable Local Network permissions, I tried this (including the restart) several times with no success.

I went to the Mac App Store and HP was listed at already on my computer and did I want to open it. I clicked open and again received the message that I needed to Enable Local Network permissions. I then deleted the app from my computer, emptied the trash, restarted my computer, and reinstalled the app from the App Store. It gave me the same message, so I deleted everything again, restarted, installed, and opened the app. It came up with the Enable Local Network permission, so I turned them off, restarted, turned them back on, and I made it through the Enable Local Network permissions. It seems to be working, and I am keeping my fingers crossed that it will continue.

Thanks again,

Jerry
