hp officejet 4500 wireless
Mac OS X 10.9 Mavericks

My Mac with OSX 10.9.5 no longer sees my hp officejet 4500 printer on my home wireless network.  I've tried restarting each device, including the router with no luck (several times).   I tried both of the solutions offered on the hp website below with no luck.  Any advice?

One basic question I have is:  Does the driver need to be installed for the computer to see the printer on the network?  Or is it vice versa (The computer needs to see the printer on the network in order to install the driver)?  Or are neither or those two things necessary?

Since October 2016, HP printer software packages are no longer delivered through Apple Software Update. Visit 123.hp.com to download the latest HP software for your printer. Alternatively, if your printer supports Apple AirPrint, you do not need a driver to print from your Mac or iOS device. For more information, go to About AirPrint (in English).

Happy New Year!

Thanks for reaching out to us on HP Support Forums. I came across your post and would like to assist.

I understand that you have an HP Officejet 4500 Wireless All-in-One Printer. I read that the Mac computer does not detect the printer on the network. I appreciate the steps you have performed and have certainly done a good job.

The printer drivers (full featured drivers or basic drivers) must be installed on the computer and only then the computer and the printer will communicate with each other.

I see that there are no drivers available for Mac 10.9. Therefore I suggest you to follow the below steps to install the inbuilt drivers for the Mac OS:

  • Please download the Mac inbuilt drivers from this link: http://apple.co/2uGMBSw.
  • From System Preferences, click on Print & Scan.
  • Click the Plus sign.
  • Select the listed HP Officejet 4500 G510n-z (This printer's drivers should work).
  • Click the drop-down menu next to Use or Print Using and click on Select Printer Software.
  • Select the HP Officejet 4500 G510n-z from the list.
  • Click OK to confirm your selection and add the printer, then try printing using the configured print queue.

You may also refer to this HP document to fix such printer connectivity issues with your Mac computer.

I genuinely hope the issue gets resolved without hassles and the unit works great. Let me know what happens. Cheers! 🙂

Thanks for your response.  When I go to the link you sent the download icon does not show up at the top of the page.  There's just a square with the text "download icon" in it.  So I can't clickon it to download.  I've tried restarting with no success.  Any idea what's going on?  Any other way I can get to this file to download?

Thanks,

Nate

You're welcome Nate.

I tried the link and it is working. Please try another web browser and check if that helps.

Let me know. Cheers! 🙂

Thanks, that worked to download the driver.  I installed the driver on to my hard drive.  However, when I go to system preferences and try to add the printer it still does not show up.

Success!  Finally!  After I installed driver I had to restart router (again) and also reset connection of printer to network (again) and now I can see the printer.

Thank you very much for your help with this!

Awesome! 🙂

I'm glad it got fixed. I must say that technical solutions can only be provided, but it was you who implemented them to perfection.

Happy printing!
