To all the people who have all sorts of HP printers and have recently installed MacOS Big Sur to find that the printing software that worked so well now warns about potential damage to their computer and the inability to print ...

Unless you have a wireless printer that's compatible with AirPrint (an Apple printing protocol), you're stuck for now until HP decides to produce new printer software.

For those with a scanner ... look at "VueScan" .  I've used it for many years with a variety of older scanners and the author has updated it to work with MacOS Big Sur and a bunch of HP scanners and All-In-One printers including mine (a Deskjet 1055).  It doesn't help with the printing though.

Wireless printers that accept AirPrint seem to work with the current MacOS.  I have an HP ENVY 5530 that still works this way.

I'm experimenting with a Raspberry Pi used as a print server since it can print to the Deskjet 1055 and it will accept AirPrint.  It's not going too well, particularly with my limited knowledge of Linux and CUPS.

Hi Cyncie, I have the exact same printer and the same exact problem since I updated to OS Big Sur 11on 11/23/20. I have been watching this posting board for some word of a fix and there is no solution. We can't use AirPrint, some links of installing other options are malware and others don't work with our printer. Until HP comes out with a new driver for all the printers including ours, we have no solution. Not to be a bummer, just trying to save you time.

If you have a phone or an iPad you should be able to print off of those, wireless or by hardwire. I've been using my son's computer that we haven't updated the OS on yet.

Well, for now I give up!  I've been trying to install and configure CUPS on several small Linux boxes ... Raspberry Pi and the nice, but obsolete and no longer supported PocketChip.  I've gotten CUPS to run on the PocketChip and I've been able to add the Deskjet 1055 to it, but jobs won't print due to a mismatch in security information.  I don't have enough experience in doing this sort of thing and it's too much work.  If  HP announces new I/O drivers for my printer (Deskjet 1055 All-In=One) in the next week or so, I'll wait.  Otherwise, I plan to junk the printer and buy some other manufacturers' device.  Sorry.

Thanks for your feedback.  I just got some information from our local MacSpa people, that these printers are meant to be obsolete and not last for more than five years.  It makes me angry that a perfectly good printer that is still functioning will be rendered inoperable because of a new OS, and I don't like having to toss a printer every time Mac decides that it needs to update something...or that there isn't an adequate update from our printer people.  Grrr.....

Thank you so much, Drmg, for this information. I've been trying to figure how to get my HP Scanjet G4050 working with the updates.  I'll give VueScan a try.

So in order to use HP Smart I need to connect the printer directly to Internet and enable Web Services; right?

I have the 8600  Plus.  I ran the HP uninstall, then reinstalled the printer with HP Easy Start, and I was able to scan with HP Smart.  Thanks for your suggestion!

This worked for me! Finally. I also have an older HP Laserjet 1018.

The Gutenberg solution seemed to send a power surge to my usb hub causing mounting/unmounting of external drives and never did print.

EDIT: Referring to user681's solution. Also I ignored the terminal commands listed at the bottom of the post. Those are not needed.

@debaire Great to hear it worked for your LaserJet 1018. Thanks for the feedback on the terminal commands; I've removed them from my post with the instructions since they aren't needed.

@user681

Have you had any issues with the printer (driver?) causing some kind of power surge? Every time I open the Printer menu in any app, it sends some kind of surge that ejects my external drive. This is regardless of if I'm connected directly or via usb hub. Not sure if it's software or hardware.
