@Gristle1953, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding Resetting the OfficeJet Pro 9120 Printer!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

If your HP OfficeJet Pro 9120 printer's menu screen is jammed during a firmware update and you have lost the WPS PIN, follow these steps to reset your printer:

Press the Power Button: Try pressing the power button to turn off the printer. If the printer does not respond or turn off, proceed to the next step.

Disconnect the Power Cord: Unplug the power cord from the printer as well as from the power source to fully disconnect the power.

Wait 60 Seconds: Allow the printer to remain unplugged for at least one minute. This helps clear any temporary issues and allows the printer to reset.

Reconnect the Power Cord: Plug the power cord directly into a wall outlet and reconnect it to the printer, avoiding the use of power strips or surge protectors.

Turn On the Printer: Press the power button to turn the printer back on. This should initiate a reset process that could recover the menu functionality.

Hope this helps!

Take care, and have an amazing day!

Hi Zoey7886,

Sadly it hasn't helped. Tried it several times but no cigar. I'll get my IT guy to try. Thanks for your help though!

Hi Zoey 7886,

Just out of interest: I turn off the printer. Then I unplug from the wall and then from the printer.... I wait 5 minutes then plug in the back of the printer and connect the wall outlet and lo and behold the printer starts up without needing to be turned on!! Weird!!

Cheers

Chris

@Gristle1953, That is curious — I can almost picture the printer humming back to life the moment it feels power again. Thanks for sharing that detail, it helps paint the picture.

When a printer powers on automatically like this, it usually means the firmware update didn’t finish properly and it’s stuck in a recovery loop. A couple of things you can try:

Hard Reset with Power Drain

Unplug the power cord from both the wall and the back of the printer.

While it’s unplugged, press and hold the power button for about 30 seconds (this drains any leftover charge).

Plug the cord back into the wall first, then into the printer. See if it still powers itself on.

Check for Forced Firmware Recovery

If the screen still locks on the update page, connect the printer to your computer with a USB cable (bypassing wireless).

On your PC, reinstall the firmware using the HP Firmware Update Utility (available on HP’s site). This sometimes jolts it past the stuck update screen.

Hope this helps!

Take care, and have an amazing day!
