HP ENVY 5020 All-in-One Printer
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

The printer keeps saying it is downloading an update - nothing comes through then it fails saying retry or OK to continue - if I press continue after a few minutes its fine, but then reboots and tries to download the update again. Only started doing this in the last four days

Hi @MCT2021

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like your HP Envy 5020 printer is caught in a loop while trying to download and install an update. This kind of issue can be frustrating, but there are a few steps you can take to try and resolve the problem.

Here’s a troubleshooting guide:

1. Restart the Printer and Router

  • Restart the Printer: Turn off your printer, wait for 30 seconds, then turn it back on.
  • Restart the Router: Unplug your router for about 30 seconds, then plug it back in. This can help resolve network connectivity issues that may be interfering with the update.

2. Check Printer's Network Connection

  • Ensure your printer is properly connected to the Wi-Fi network. You can check the connection status on the printer's display or via the HP Smart app. If the printer is having trouble connecting, it might fail to download the update.

To check or reconnect to Wi-Fi:

  • On the printer’s control panel, navigate to the Wireless settings and verify the connection.
  • If necessary, reconnect to the Wi-Fi network.

3. Check Printer Firmware Manually

If the printer keeps trying to download an update, it may be that the update is stuck or there’s an issue with the firmware version. You can manually check and update the printer firmware:

  1. Go to HP’s Support Website: Visit the HP Envy 5020 support page and search for your printer model.
  2. Download Latest Firmware: If there’s an available firmware update, download it from the website.
  3. Install Firmware: Follow the instructions to manually install the update on your printer. Make sure your printer is connected via USB or Wi-Fi during the process.

4. Reset Printer Network Settings

If the update failure is related to a network issue, resetting the network settings may help:

  • On the printer's control panel, go to Settings or Network Settings.
  • Look for an option to Restore Network Settings or Reset Network.
  • After the reset, reconnect the printer to your Wi-Fi network and check if the update issue persists.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Thanks - very helpful although in the end had to go to a restore to factory default settings to clear the issue. All now working fine
