__My Macbook Pro OS X catalina has been printing from an old HP laserJet 1200 connected via USB without any problems.
__But this morning I updated the system software, and suddenly developed a problem with print jobs hanging.
__Also got a malware message, which I had never encountered before, when I tried to delete and reinstall the printer driver.
__After a few annoying hours, the following has restored Mac and HP LJ 1200 connectivity, and I can finally print again. Hope it may help others to avoid hours of frustration.

1. enter Printers and Scanners from System Prefs
2. use (-) minus sign button to delete the printer
3. use (+) plus sign button to add the printer back using the GENERIC POSTSCRIPT PRINTER option from the "Use" menu.
(Do NOT use the HP LaserJet 1200 option which is also available from the "Use"menu. Apparently the software update has introduced some incompatibility which now prevents this driver from working. BTW, the icon in the doc will look different. Printing with generic ps driver seems a little slower, but just happy to have it working again.)

The solution is to download (and install) this package which will update drivers AND THE CERTIFICATE:
ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software12/HP_Quick_Start/osx/Installations/Essentials/hp-printer-essen...
Easy Admin did nothing. Easy Startup did nothing. 5.1 drivers did nothing. This worked for me!
If this solved your issue, please thumbs up and mark as solved!

Do things -in this order!
The solution seems to be to: Use Easy Start (https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/hp-easy-start/7376041 - make sure your OS is correct) and see if your printer is supported. If not, move on to the next steps.
Uninstall your printer USING THIS METHOD ONLY (NOT EASY START, NOT EASY ADMIN): Apple Logo (Upper Left of Screen)/System Preferences/Printers & Scanners. Then restart your computer.
Download (and install) this package (From HP FTP) which will update drivers AND THE CERTIFICATE:
ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software12/HP_Quick_Start/osx/Installations/Essentials/hp-printer-essen... If the link comes up blank, try right/control clicking and saving it.
The install takes a bit. Let it run, even if it seems like it stalled out! When it completes, restart.
Then reinstall your printer using: Apple Logo (Upper Left of Screen)/System Preferences/Printers & Scanners, and use the default drivers. If drivers do not show up, download and install the 5.1 driver package from here: https://support.apple.com/kb/dl1888?locale=en_US . Then restart your computer.
It is NOT the same as the driver package, Easy Start, or Easy Admin other people are recommending.
