OfficeJet 8610
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I have an HP OfficeJet 8610 Pro printer.  It has always worked on my roommate's laptop.  It always worked on my old computer.  I recently built a new computer.  It is a desktop running Windows 10 x64 Pro and has Wifi.  I merely ported my HDDs to the new computer.  The printer wouldn't work.  I attempted to re-install the printer, only the installation software could not find the printer, even when I typed in the IP address of the printer.  I finally removed the printer and fax items from Devices and Printers and uninstalled all HP software.  I installed the printer software again, this time the printer was found and installation was mostly successful.  The part of the installation that failed was the "continue online" part, the website for my printer could not be found.  Anyways, the problem is that, in Devices and Printers, I cannot set the OfficeJet 8610 to be the default printer.  In fact, it only has options that indicate that it is just a scanner and not a printer.  When I attempt to print something, I'm able to select the HP OfficeJet 8610 as the device to print with.  However, every time I attempt to print something, there is an unknown error in the Windows printer spool.  So I'm confounded.  Why won't the printer work properly with my new machine?  I have no other issues with my new desktop.

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Are you using the HP Smart App on your PC? If not, you may try and install to see if that works: https://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c04675142. If yes, uninstall and reinstall it.

If the issue persists, try these steps:

Let's run the HP Print and Scan Doctor:

Use this link for details on using the HP Print and Scan doctor: https://hp.care/2JyaC93

If the issue still persists, let's do a root uninstall and reinstall of the software:

Unplug any USB cable, if any, before doing this.

1.) In Windows, search for and open Programs and features

2.) Select your HP Printer

3.) Select Uninstall

4.) In Windows, search for and open Devices and printers

5.) In the Devices and Printers windows look for your HP printer. If you see it listed right-click on it and choose 'Delete' or 'Remove Device'

6.) Open up the run command with the "Windows key + R" key combo.

7.) Type printui.exe /s and click Ok. (Note: there is a space in between “printui.exe” and “/s”)

8.) Click on the "Drivers" tab

9.) Look for HP Printer driver. If you see it Click on it and click Remove at the bottom

10.) Select Ok

11.) Select Apply and Ok on the Print Server Properties windows

12.) Close Devices and Printers

13.)  Open up the run command with the "Windows key + R" key combo.

14.) Type c:/programdata and click Ok. Go to Hewlett Packard folder, remove any printer related folders & files.

15.) Restart the computer.

Once done, please download and install the software from here:

https://support.hp.com/in-en/drivers

Okay HP Smart App couldn't print either, I got the same error in the Windows printer queue.

I tried HP Print and Scan doctor.  The program detected 3 installed printers... my old printer, with the actual graphic, and 2 instances of my current printer, only 1 instance had the actual graphic and the ip address.  Attempting to connect to either instance was unsuccessful.

So then I attempted the full uninstall and then reinstall that you described.  I followed all of your steps exactly.

When I attempted to install the correct printer software drivers, the installer couldn't find my printer at all.  I typed in the ip address and the software could still not find my printer.  I tried reinstalling several times, and not once did the software find my printer.

The difference between my current desktop and my previous desktop is that my current desktop has wifi.  But I have no internet connection issues, so I don't know why my computer couldn't find my printer.

Any further ideas?

Restart the print spooler and try uninstalling the drivers

Press “Windows key” + “r” to get the “Run” window.

Type "services.msc" to get Services – Go to “Print spooler” – Right-click and “Stop” the service.

Now again open "Run" - Type “spool” and ok - Go to PRINTERS folder - delete everything in that folder.

Go to services again - Start the print spooler.

Now uninstall and reinstall the printer driver.

Keep me posted.

The problem is that I can't get to that point anymore because I uninstalled the software already and now the software won't install at all because the software can't find the printer.
