I have two identical laptop computers, one can print to the HP 9018 wirelessly and the other receives a message to enter "Recipient Fax Number" instead of printing.  I have deleted the printer and reinstalled it numerous times on the laptop that fails to print.  With the installation I get two printers installed:

HP OfficeJet Pro 9010 Series [9AD32E] (fax)

Ready

HP9AD32E.search.charter.net (HP OfficeJet Pro 9010 Series)

Default

On the laptop that will print, the installed three printers are:

HP9AD32E.search.charter.net (HP OfficeJet Pro 9010 Series)

Microsoft Print to PDF

OneNote (Desktop)

On the laptop that does print the "Let Windows Manage my default printer" is ON.  I have tried both ON and OFF on the laptop that fails to print.

Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks!!

@BHM_119, Hello and welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for posting your question. I'm here to help you get things back on track.

It sounds like your second laptop is defaulting to the Fax driver instead of the Print driver for your HP OfficeJet Pro 9018. This can happen if Windows installs the Fax version during setup or sets it as the default printer. Let’s walk through the steps to fix this:

Remove the Fax Printer

  • Go to Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners
  • Locate HP OfficeJet Pro 9010 Series (Fax) and click Remove device

Ensure the Correct Printer is Set as Default

  • In the same Printers & scanners window, find:
    • HP9AD32E.search.charter.net (HP OfficeJet Pro 9010 Series)
  • Click on it and choose Manage
  • Click Set as default

If “Let Windows manage my default printer” is ON, Windows may switch the default printer based on usage. You can turn this OFF to manually control the default printer.

Check the Printer Driver

  • Open Control Panel > Devices and Printers
  • Right-click the correct printer (HP OfficeJet Pro 9010 Series) and choose Printer Properties
  • Go to the Advanced tab and confirm the Driver is set to:
    • HP OfficeJet Pro 9010 Series PCL-3 or similar (not Fax)

If it shows a Fax driver, reinstall using HP’s full software package.

Download and Install HP Smart or Full Software

  • Visit: Official HP® Support
  • Download HP Smart or the Full Feature Software and Drivers
  • Run the installer and follow prompts to add the printer correctly

Additional Tips

  • Avoid using “Add Printer” from Windows Settings alone; HP Smart ensures the correct driver is used.
  • After installation, verify that only the Print version appears in your printer list.

I hope the information shared has been useful and resolves your concern.

Wishing you a smooth and hassle-free experience ahead!
