When I try to print out a letter, there are all sorts of lines through the letters and the whole page is barely distinguishable. I have tried fixing the alignment but I print the alignment page out and that looks similar. I try and use the realignment sheet but the scanner then doesn't pick it up either. I have tried cleaning the ink cartridges too. Any help is appreciated.

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

  • The lines on the print outs, are they Horizontal or vertical?
  • Have you tried making a standalone copy and check if the issue persists?

Power resetting the printer, Updating the printer firmware and cleaning the ink cartridges may resolve this issue. Let us try these steps.

Step 1: Use compatible ink cartridges

Step 2: Check the estimated ink levels

On the printer control panel, touch the Ink icon  to display the current estimated ink levels.

Image: Example of estimated ink levels.

Step 3: Reset the printer

1. With the printer turned on, remove the ink cartridges, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.

2. Wait at least 60 seconds.

3. Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.

4. Turn ON the printer, if it does not automatically turn on.

5. Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you proceed.

Step 4: Update the printer firmware

Click here to download and install the latest firmware from your computer.

Step 5: Perform steps 8, 11, 14 and 9 from this document.

Step 6: Replace the problem ink cartridge

If you have a defective cartridge or printhead, it might be under warranty. To check the warranty on your ink or toner supplies, go to Printer and Page Yield Overview, and then review the limited warranty information for your supplies.
