Every time I resign myself to the fact that I'm stuck with a badly made product (My 2nd one (Replacement)), I see a post that reminds me I am not the only one (Thanks to Antny3). Having tried every "Canned" reply HP can suggest (with no fix), I want to point out my latest observation. By using "Quiet" printing and anti-vibration pads, I have been able to dampen most of the noise except for the last phase of "Powering up". The "Shake, rattle and roll" makes the printer try to "walk" or "Sounds like it's going to explode".
Observation: I've finally noticed that when I re-fill and close the paper tray, the printer goes through that same "Shake, rattle and roll" process. It's like it can't figure out what kind or size of paper it has. Having read all the posts on the "Short comings" of the paper tray, makes you wonder.
Question: 1. Is there an updated version of the paper tray available? 2. Does HP have a "non-do-it-yourself" "tape and glue" fix for the many "Short comings" of the paper tray.
Sorry for being "long winded".

@Jade3388, Welcome to HP Support Community,
Thank you for reaching out, and I absolutely understand your frustration. It sounds like your printer is doing its best impression of a rock concert 🎸, and I’m really sorry you’re dealing with that 🎶😬. We definitely want you to have a smooth, quiet printing experience, and I’m here to help! 😊
Regarding your observations:
Updated Paper Tray:
Unfortunately, I don’t have specific details on whether there’s a newer version of the paper tray available right now. However, we do periodically improve our product designs, and it might be worth checking the official HP parts store to see if there’s an updated tray that could help with the problem.
Non-DIY Fixes:
I know the “DIY fix” can be tempting, but there are still a few ways we can address this together. Here are some steps you can follow to try to resolve the issue:
Check Paper Tray Alignment
- Make sure the paper tray is properly aligned and seated correctly in the printer. If the tray isn’t inserted fully or is skewed, it could cause the printer to "fumble" when recognizing the paper type and size.
Inspect the Paper Tray for Damage
- Check for any cracks, misalignments, or deformities in the paper tray itself. If the tray has even a small bend or crack, it could cause issues with how it feeds paper.
- A damaged tray could trigger error messages or even cause the printer to behave oddly during the loading process.
Adjust Paper Guides
- Double-check the paper guides inside the tray to make sure they are set to the correct size for the paper you're using. Make sure they are snug but not overly tight.

Check Paper Quality and Load
- Ensure you are using the correct type of paper for your printer. Sometimes, heavy or textured paper can cause feeding issues. Also, avoid overloading the tray, as this can cause paper jams or feeding errors.
- Paper that isn’t aligned properly or that’s too thick for the printer can lead to the printer trying to force the paper through, making a lot of noise.
Clean the Paper Tray Sensors
- Gently clean the paper tray sensors with a soft cloth. Be careful not to use any harsh chemicals.
- Dust or debris on the sensors can cause them to misread the paper size or type, which could lead to unusual behavior when you insert or refill the tray.
Update Printer Firmware
- Check for any available firmware updates for your printer. Sometimes, issues like this can be resolved with a simple software update.
Reset Printer to Factory Settings
- If the issue persists, you may want to try resetting the printer to its factory settings. This will clear any custom settings or preferences that might be causing the issue.
Check for Paper Jams or Obstructions
- Open all accessible parts of the printer and carefully check for any paper jams or foreign objects in the printer’s paper path.
- Anything blocking the paper feed can cause the printer to make unusual noises, struggle to load the paper, or even try to move in a way that makes it appear like it’s "walking."
I hope these steps help resolve the issue 😀
Please feel free to reply here if you have any questions or if you need further clarification on any of the steps.
Take care and have a good day. 😇
