Officejet 4650
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hi,

My Officejet 4650 will not power on.

When I plug it in the display flickers for an instance and then stays black.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Cheers!

Garry

Hi @GarryB103

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

Thank you for reaching out, and I’m truly sorry to hear your OfficeJet 4650 isn’t powering on. I can imagine how frustrating that must feel, especially when you’re ready to print and the device doesn’t respond. I appreciate you taking the time to describe the flickering display—it’s a helpful detail.

Let’s walk through a few steps to try and bring your printer back to life:

1. Power Reset the Printer This simple step can often clear power-related glitches:

  • Disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer and from the wall outlet.
  • Wait for at least 60 seconds. During this time, press and hold the power button on the printer for about 15 seconds to drain any residual charge.
  • Plug the power cord directly into a wall outlet (avoid power strips or surge protectors).
  • Reconnect the cord to the printer and press the power button to see if it turns on.

2. Check the Power Source

  • Ensure the wall outlet is working by plugging in another device like a lamp or phone charger.
  • If the outlet is controlled by a switch, make sure it’s turned on.

3. Inspect the Power Cord and Adapter

  • Examine the power cord and adapter for any signs of damage, fraying, or bent pins.
  • If you have access to another compatible HP power adapter, try using it to rule out a faulty power supply.

4. Try a Different Wall Outlet

  • Move the printer to a different room or outlet to eliminate the possibility of a localized electrical issue.

5. Listen and Look Closely

  • When you plug it in, do you hear any faint sounds like a fan or motor starting?
  • Does the power button light up or blink at all?

If the display remains completely unresponsive after these steps, the issue may be deeper within the printer’s internal power circuitry. I’ll be here if you’d like to go further or try additional steps. Let’s get your printer humming again.

Hi Hawks_Eye

Thanks for your answer.

I went through all the basics and proved it was getting power, but it still wouldn't switch on.  So I concluded it was time to buy a new one.

Cheers,

Hi @GarryB103

Thanks for letting me know how it turned out. It sounds like you did a thorough job checking the basics, so I can understand why you decided to move on to a new printer once the 4640 refused to power up. Sometimes, when the internal power board or logic board fails, there’s unfortunately no practical repair path for home users.

If you’re replacing it, you might find the newer OfficeJet or Smart Tank series appealing—they’re designed with easier maintenance and more efficient ink usage. Since you’ve already been hands-on with troubleshooting, you’d probably appreciate the improvements in setup and reliability.
