HP LaserJet MFP M234sdwe Printer
Microsoft Windows 11

The control panel stopped responding.  It no longer powers up the unit even though there is power to the printer as it cycles after it has been unplugged and plugged back in.  Can the control panel be reset?

Hi @ErikJF55,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If the control panel on your HP LaserJet M234sdwe is not responding and you’re experiencing issues with powering it up despite the printer receiving power, there are a few troubleshooting steps you can try:

1. Perform a Hard Reset

  1. Turn Off the Printer: Power off the printer using the power button.
  2. Unplug the Printer: Disconnect the power cord from the printer and wait for about 60 seconds.
  3. Replug and Power On: Reconnect the power cord and turn the printer back on. This can sometimes resolve issues with the control panel not responding.

2. Inspect the Power Supply and Connections

  1. Check Power Cable: Ensure that the power cable is securely connected to both the printer and the power outlet.
  2. Try a Different Outlet: Plug the printer into a different power outlet to rule out issues with the current outlet.
  3. Inspect the Power Cord: Look for any visible damage to the power cord. If damaged, you may need a replacement cord.

3. Check for Printer Firmware Updates

Sometimes, firmware issues can cause problems with the control panel. If you can access the printer via a network or USB connection, check for firmware updates:

  1. Visit the HP Support Website: Go to the HP Support page and search for your printer model.
  2. Download Firmware: Download the latest firmware for your printer model.
  3. Install Firmware: Follow the instructions to update the firmware, usually done via the HP Smart app or directly from a computer.

4. Perform a Printer Reset

If you cannot access the control panel and the above steps do not work, try a full reset:

  1. Unplug the Printer: Disconnect the power cord from the printer.
  2. Wait: Leave it unplugged for at least 10 minutes to ensure all residual power is drained.
  3. Reconnect and Power On: Plug the power cord back in and power on the printer.

5. Check for Physical Issues

  1. Inspect the Control Panel: Check the control panel for any signs of physical damage or obstruction.
  2. Look for Stuck Buttons: Ensure that no buttons are stuck or jammed.

6. Test Printer Functionality

  1. Print from Computer: Try printing a document from your computer to see if the printer itself is working despite the non-functional control panel.
  2. Check Network or USB Connection: Ensure the printer is properly connected to your computer or network

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
