My printer HP Laser JET MFP M232 has error code 79 and it will not go away. I disconnected and shut the printer off for a few days and turn it back on. It still has the error code 79 and I cannot do anything. Anyone has any idea how I can fix this? Do I just need to throw the printer away? 😞

Hi @JLEE770,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

Error code 79 on an HP LaserJet printer typically indicates a firmware issue. Before considering throwing the printer away, there are a few steps you can try to resolve the problem:

Restart the Printer: You've already tried this, but it's worth another attempt. Turn off the printer, disconnect it from power, wait for a few minutes, then reconnect it and turn it back on.

Check Connections: Ensure all cables connecting the printer to the computer or network are securely plugged in.

Update Firmware: Visit the HP website and check if there's a firmware update available for your printer model. If there is, follow the instructions to download and install the update.

Clear Print Queue: If there are any pending print jobs in the printer queue, clear them out. Sometimes a corrupted print job can cause this error.

Factory Reset: If the issue persists, you may need to perform a factory reset on the printer. Be aware that this will reset all settings on the printer, so you'll need to reconfigure it afterward.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

If this is a wireless printer, temporarily connect a wired ethernet cable to printer and try restart it. If it comes to ready, find the most current firmware for the printer and install it (keep in mind that updating the firmware might invalidate any 3rd party cartridges you currently use. in that case if you can get by using cabled networking do that).

I saw this solution in another thread that helped resolve the another user's 79 issue. You might want to try these steps :-

  1. Turn off the printer
  2. Remove the toner cartridge from the printer
  3. Wait for 30 seconds to 1 minute.
  4. Turn on the printer again. Printer will show Er07 indicating missing cartridge. Now insert the toner cartridge.
  5. Error should go away and the printer is ready for printing.
