My printer was replaced under warranty. When attempting to print, I am given an unknown error.  The printer being detected by HP Smart is the old printer, not the replacement.  How do I set it up?

Hi @Dickidean,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like your computer may still be trying to communicate with the old printer that was replaced. To resolve this issue, you can follow these steps to set up the new printer.

Uninstall Old Printer Software:

  • Go to "Control Panel" on your computer.
  • Select "Devices and Printers."
  • Right-click on the old printer and choose "Remove device" or "Delete."

Install New Printer Software:

  • Make sure your new printer is connected to the computer and powered on.
  • Download and install the latest printer driver and software from the official HP website. Ensure you select the correct model (Color LaserJet Pro MFP M283cdw).

Update Printer Preferences:

  • Open "Devices and Printers" in the Control Panel.
  • Right-click on the new printer and select "Printer properties."
  • Update any settings or preferences if needed.

Update Default Printer:

  • Make sure the new printer is set as the default printer. Right-click on the new printer and select "Set as default printer."

Restart Devices:

  • Restart your computer and the new printer.

Check HP Smart:

  • Open the HP Smart application.
  • Remove the old printer from the list if it's still there.
  • Add the new printer by following the on-screen instructions.

Verify Network Connection:

  • Ensure that your new printer is connected to the same network as your computer.

Update Firmware (if needed):

  • Check the HP website for any firmware updates for your printer model. If available, download and install them following the provided instructions.

After completing these steps, your computer should recognize the new printer, and you should be able to print without encountering an unknown error.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
