Hi @AVDorn

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

I'm really sorry your HP Smart Tank 790 is stuck in the “The HP software is setting up your printer…” state. That kind of freeze usually points to a setup service hang, network sync failure, or incomplete Web Services registration, especially if the printer was recently added or reset.

Here’s a focused recovery path to help break out of that setup loop:

Step-by-Step Fix for “Setting Up Your Printer…” Freeze

1. Restart the Printer and Network

  • Power off the printer
  • Unplug your router for 30 seconds, then plug it back in
  • Power the printer back on after the network is stable

This clears any stalled network handshake between the printer and HP cloud services.

2. Access the Embedded Web Server (EWS)

  • Print the Network Configuration Page from the printer’s control panel
  • Note the IP address
  • Enter the IP address into a browser to open the EWS

This gives you direct access to the printer’s internal settings.

3. Reset Web Services

  • In the EWS, go to Web Services > Settings
  • Click Remove Web Services
  • Restart the printer
  • Return to EWS and click Enable Web Services
  • Reprint the Information Page to confirm a fresh connection

This forces the printer to re-register with HP’s cloud and often clears setup hangs.

4. Re-add the Printer in HP Smart

  • Open the HP Smart app
  • Remove the stuck printer from your account
  • Sign out of HP Smart
  • Restart your computer and printer
  • Sign back in and add the printer again

This refreshes your account’s link to the printer and may restore normal setup flow.

5. Update Firmware

Firmware updates often include fixes for setup and connectivity bugs.

Let me know what happens after resetting Web Services and re-adding the printer—I’ll guide you further based on that.

You’re doing everything right by catching this early—I’ll stay with you until it’s resolved.
