Hi @Jennca43,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

I'd be glad to help you!

It sounds like your HP OfficeJet Pro 9028e is stuck in a setup loop, which can be quite frustrating, especially when it was working fine before. This issue usually occurs when the printer’s setup process gets interrupted or when there's a communication problem between the printer and the HP Smart app. Let's try to get your printer back up and running with these steps:

Follow the steps to Resolve the "Finish Printer Setup" Error:

Restart Your Printer and Devices:

  • Turn off the printer, unplug it from the power source, and wait about 60 seconds.
  • Plug it back in and turn it on.
  • Restart your computer or mobile device and the Wi-Fi router.

Check Network Connection:

  • Make sure your printer is connected to the same Wi-Fi network as your computer or mobile device.
  • On the printer’s control panel, go to Network Settings or Wireless Settings and confirm it’s connected to the correct network.

Reinstall HP Smart App:

  • On your device, uninstall the HP Smart app.
  • Restart your device, then download and reinstall the latest version of the HP Smart app from the official app store or HP’s website.
  • Open the app and follow the prompts to add your printer.

Run the Printer Setup Again:

  • Open the HP Smart app and select Add Printer if your printer doesn’t show up automatically.
  • Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the setup process. Make sure you follow every step, including accepting terms and enabling web services if prompted.

Update Printer Firmware:

  • Make sure your printer’s firmware is up to date, as outdated firmware can cause setup issues.
  • In the HP Smart app, go to Printer Settings > Advanced Settings (or EWS for some models) > Tools > Printer Updates and check for any available updates.

Please find the remaining steps in the next post.

Hi @Jennca43,

Please find the remaining steps below.

Reset the Printer:

  • If the above steps don't work, try a network reset on your printer:
    • On the printer’s control panel, go to Network Settings > Restore Network Settings.
    • Confirm the reset, and then reconnect the printer to your Wi-Fi network.

Remove and Re-add the Printer:

  • Go to Settings on your computer, and under Devices or Printers & Scanners, remove your HP OfficeJet Pro 9028e.
  • Use the HP Smart app to re-add the printer after it has been removed.

Check for Errors on Printer Screen:

  • If the printer screen shows a specific error message, follow any additional instructions provided or refer to the printer’s manual.

Disable VPN or Security Software:

  • If you’re using a VPN or any security software that might be blocking the connection, try disabling it temporarily to see if it resolves the setup issue.

Tips:

  • Ensure HP Account Sign-in: Make sure you are signed into your HP account within the HP Smart app, as some setup steps require authentication.
  • Printer Offline Issue: Check that your printer is not set to "Offline" in the printer settings on your computer.

If the problem persists despite following these steps, there may be an underlying issue.

We can try a semi-full reset and see if that works. The reset instructions are specific for your printer and performing those steps on a different printer may brick the device.

I've sent you a private message with reset instructions, follow the reset instructions to perform a full reset and re-initialize the printer.

Keep me posted for further assistance
