Product: HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M283fdw

I have a new MacBook air and a Color Laser Jet Pro MFP M479fsw - 
I can print but I can't scan to PDF only to JPEG - to scan I need to go to Apple Systems, locate the printer, then the scanner, then open, then print. Too many steps. With my previous Mac, I would open the icon on the dashboard, load the paper, and scan it. It gave me options of where to send the document, i.e. email, folders, etc. I can't do any of that anymore. I have downloaded the HP Smart, and when I hit printer/scan I get a message my printer is off line and, asks me to connect to a printer. MY printer is online .. i am able to print without a problem - IDeas?
