HP Envy 6555e All-in-One Printer

Before I run it over with my car, can someone tell me whether there is any hope of the Envy 6555e ever working well?  I have to regularly unplug it, wait, plug it back in to clear errors.  I have document feeder problems - it frequently thinks something is in the feeder when there isn't.  Lately, the printer starts to print, but then stops printing.  I often have to unplug it, wait, plug it back in to get it to make a manual copy from say a book.  If I don't close the printer dialog in my Mac, it randomly starts scanning at any given time.  If frequently says it is out of paper, when it isn't.  It frequently loses the network connection.  Yikes!  What is wrong with this thing?  Built on a Friday?

@jerikball, Welcome to HP Support Community,

Thank you for posting your query; I’m here to help by guiding you through steps to resolve this issue

It sounds like it's having quite the "Monday" every day! 😅

I hear your frustration loud and clear, and I totally get where you're coming from. Printers can be a bit... temperamental at times, like that one colleague who constantly forgets their coffee order and can't figure out the Wi-Fi. 😜

Let's see if we can work through some steps before you start considering the car as a solution! 😬

Frequent Error Resets

This could be a software hiccup or a firmware issue. Try updating the printer's firmware and your printer drivers on your Mac. Sometimes, this can help smooth out those annoying "reset-and-pray" moments.

Update Printer Firmware (Update the firmware on an HP printer | HP® Support)

  • Go to the HP Customer Support - Software and Driver Downloads page. Enter your printer model number and search for the latest firmware update. Follow the instructions to download and install the firmware update.

Driver Update: On your Mac, go to System Preferences > Printers & Scanners, then select your printer and click on "Options & Supplies" to check for the latest driver updates.

Document Feeder Acting Up (False Paper Detection)

It's likely a paper sensor issue. Try gently cleaning the scanner and feeder rollers with a soft, lint-free cloth. If there's any debris or paper dust in there, it might be tricking the sensors.

Stops Printing Mid-Print

This could be a connectivity problem or even an issue with the print queue. Try clearing your print queue on your Mac (check System Preferences > Printers & Scanners, select your printer, and hit "Open Print Queue"). Also, make sure the printer is fully connected to the network, and if you’re using Wi-Fi, try a direct USB connection to test if that resolves it.

Random Scanning Starts

The printer might be misinterpreting signals from your Mac or a bad connection between the two. Try checking the HP Smart App on your Mac and make sure it's updated to the latest version.

Out of Paper Errors

This can happen if the paper tray isn’t seated correctly, or the sensor is dusty. Try adjusting the paper tray slightly or ensure it’s not jammed in any way. Sometimes even a little misalignment can cause the printer to think there's no paper.

Network Connection Dropping

This can be a result of a weak Wi-Fi signal or network interference. Try moving your printer closer to your router or using a wired connection if possible. You can also try rebooting your router and the printer to reset the network connection.

Feel free to give me a shout if you need further help, and let me know if you're able to get things running smoothly again. Stay strong, my friend! 💪😎

Take care and have a good day.
