The new HP app assigns names to the printers - My Printer 1, My Printer 2, etc. I have more than one printer. It would be nice to give them each a name so it is easy to figure out which printer I’m working with. I have Bonjour names for the printers but those don’t show on the app. Is there a way to give the printers names?

Hi @dedelstein,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

Great question! Thank you for clarifying that you’re using the new HP App (not HP Smart). The HP App currently has limited customization options compared to HP Smart, but here’s what you can do:

Can You Rename Printers in the HP App?

  • Direct renaming inside the HP App is not supported yet (it assigns generic names like My Printer 1, My Printer 2).
  • The app uses the printer’s network name or system name, so you need to rename the printer at the OS or network level for it to reflect in the app.

Workarounds to Rename Printers

Option 1: Rename in Windows

  1. Open Control Panel → Devices and Printers.
  2. Right-click your printer → Printer Properties.
  3. Change the name under the General tab.
  4. Restart the HP App so it refreshes the printer list.

Option 2: Rename in macOS

  1. Go to System Settings → Printers & Scanners.
  2. Select your printer → Rename.
  3. Restart the HP App.

Option 3: Rename via Printer’s Embedded Web Server (EWS)

  1. Find your printer’s IP address:
    • On the printer screen: Setup → Network Settings → Wireless Summary.
  2. Enter the IP in a browser.
  3. Go to Settings → Printer Information → Name.
  4. Save changes. (This name will appear in the HP App after refreshing.)

Why Bonjour Names Don’t Show

The HP App currently does not pull Bonjour names; it uses the printer’s system or network name. Renaming at the OS or EWS level is the only way to make it easier to identify.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
