I just purchased this computer and when I set it up I somehow lost the HP Smart app on my Mac. It was replaced by an app that is simply called HP  (version 20.1.0.3461).  The app works fine but I am bothered by the fact that each of my printers is named My Printer, My Printer 2 etc. I would really like to give the printers more meaningful names.  Is it possible to change the names of the printers in this app?

Hi @ccoe119,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I completely understand how it can feel a bit impersonal or confusing when your printers are just named “My Printer,” “My Printer 2,” etc., especially when you're managing multiple devices. You're doing the right thing by seeking clarity, and I’m here to help.

🛠️ Can You Rename Printers in the HP App (Version 20.1.0.3461 on macOS 15 Sequoia)?

As of now, the HP app (not HP Smart) version 20.1.0.3461 on macOS does not offer a built-in option to rename printers directly within the app interface.

Workaround: Rename Printers via macOS System Settings

You can still give your printers meaningful names using macOS:

  1. Go to System Settings > Printers & Scanners
  2. Select the printer you want to rename
  3. Click Options & Supplies
  4. In the Name field, enter your preferred name
  5. Click OK to save

This name will reflect in most macOS interfaces, though it may not update inside the HP app itself.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!

The fact that printers are just named “My Printer,” “My Printer 2,” etc. is unacceptable. Please add a rename function in the app.

Could not agree more. Being able to set a custom name in the UI would seem to be common sense, table stakes basic feature for an application used to manage printers. Absolutely mind boggling.
