The Mac's "Print Center" lists the HP F4400 series as "Paused" but nothing happens when I try to print. I have had this printer/scanner all in one for a long time and it's a great machine and I hope to keep using it with my newly purchased MacBook Air laptop. However, HP says the printer's serial number, [Edited] is not "valid" when I enter it for Support.

Hi @Hayflich59,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

Thank you for reaching out, and I completely understand how important it is to keep a reliable printer like your HP Deskjet F4400 series working with your new Mac. I’ll do my best to clarify the situation and help you get the printer running again.

About the Serial Number

The serial number you entered appears to be invalid or not recognized in HP’s system.
This usually happens in the following situations:

  • The serial number was entered with a mistyped character (for example, confusing “0” with “O” or “1” with “I”).
  • The model is older and may not show up in newer HP automated lookup tools.
  • The label may be faded or not the correct S/N (sometimes people mistakenly enter a product number or regulatory number).

If possible, please double-check the sticker on the printer:

Look for:

  • Serial No:” or “S/N
Usually found at the back or bottom of the printer.

Feel free to share the format (not the full number), for example: “It starts with CN…”. That will help confirm its validity.

About the Printer Showing as “Paused” on Mac

The “Paused” state is a macOS queue issue, not a printer hardware failure.
Please try the following steps:

1️⃣ Resume the Printer

On your Mac:

  1. Go to System Settings > Printers & Scanners
  2. Select HP Deskjet F4400
  3. Click Resume (if available)

2️⃣ Reset the macOS Printing System

This usually fixes stuck queues and “Paused” status.

  1. System Settings > Printers & Scanners
  2. Right-click (or Control-click) in the empty space on the left printer list
  3. Select Reset printing system
  4. Re-add the printer by selecting Add Printer → choose HP Deskjet F4400

3️⃣ Install HP Drivers or Use AirPrint

Since this is an older printer, macOS may not automatically install HP software.

  • When adding the printer, choose “AirPrint” if available,
    or
  • Download HP Easy Start for macOS (if supported for your OS version)

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
