Hi @MyScr33nName,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding your printer!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

Try these steps:

Accessing the Embedded Web Server (EWS)

Find the Printer's IP Address:

  • Print a Network Configuration Page from the printer’s control panel. This page will include the IP address.
  • Alternatively, access the printer’s menu on the screen, navigate to the network settings, and view the IP address.

Open the Embedded Web Server:

  • On your computer, open a web browser.
  • Enter the IP address of the printer into the address bar and press Enter.

Log in to the EWS:

  • Once accessed, you may be prompted to log in.
  • If you haven’t set a specific password, try using default credentials. Often, the default username is "admin" with an empty password field or "admin" as the password. Some HP printers do not have default passwords.
  • If prompted to create a new password, follow the on-screen instructions to set your Device Administrator password.

Setting or Changing the Password:

  • Navigate to the security settings within the EWS.
  • Look for an option related to password or administrator settings.
  • You can set a new password or change the existing one.

Resetting Password if Forgotten

If you've forgotten the Device Administrator password and are unable to access the EWS, you may need to perform a printer reset. This procedure varies by model; therefore, consulting the printer's manual or HP support for specific instructions might be necessary.

Important Considerations

  • Security: If you set or change the passwords, choose a strong password to ensure the security of your printer.
  • Documentation: Keep a record of your Device Administrator password in a secure place.
  • Firmware Updates: Ensure that your printer's firmware is up to date, as updates can sometimes reset settings or enhance security features.

I hope this helps.

The instructions say "If you haven’t set a specific password, try using default credentials. Often, the default username is "admin" with an empty password field or "admin" as the password. Some HP printers do not have default passwords."

If I leave the Current Password blank, it says "Missing input value".  If I enter "admin", I get "Error: The operation failed. Please verify your configuration and try again."

Hi @MyScr33nName,

Thanks for your update, and I totally understand how frustrating this can be. Let’s get you sorted!

Since the default credentials ("admin" or blank) aren't working and you're receiving errors like "Missing input value" or "The operation failed," here are a few additional steps to try:

Try Alternative Default Credentials

Some printers ship with model-specific credentials. You can try:

Username: admin
Password: password

Username: admin
Password: (leave blank)

Username: Administrator
Password: admin

If none of these work, it’s possible a custom password was set during initial setup.

Reset the Printer Settings (Partial Reset)

A partial reset might help restore admin access if a password was unknowingly set.

Here’s how:

Power off the printer.

Hold down Back (↩️) and Cancel () simultaneously.

While holding those buttons, power the printer ON.

Continue holding until the printer shows a "Permanent Storage Init" or similar reset message.

This will reset the network settings and admin credentials to default.

Note: This won't erase your firmware, but custom settings may be lost. If you're in an office environment, check with your IT team before proceeding.

Try HP Smart Admin Portal

If the printer is linked to HP Smart Admin and you are listed as an IT admin, you can:

Visit https://admin.hp.com.

Sign in using your HP account linked to the printer.

Under your device, you can manage users and reset passwords remotely.

Factory Reset (If All Else Fails)

If a partial reset doesn't help, a full factory reset may be required.

If the issue still persists, refer to the steps on this link to restore factory defaults.

I hope this helps.

My printer is a Color LaserJet Pro MFP3301fdw and doesn't have the "Back" and "Cancel" buttons, so I can't use that method to reset it.  However, I did a factory reset from the user interface, reconfigured the printer, and then tried to sign in as the  "Device Administrator, but the printer password is not blank or set to "admin" or "Administrator".

Also, the default username is Admin - I can't change that.

Any other suggestions?
