Hello! I've been having an issue reinstalling the drivers for my printer!

Model: HP LaserJet M1132 MFP
Serial No:  (Edited)

The machine is old, from 2007, and has had absolutely no problems until recently. It first started printing documents from way way before that had already "left" the queue (or so I thought) and has not stopped reprinting the same most recent document once I fixed that issue. So I decided to completely reinstall the drivers to try and fix it, but it doesn't seem to work. Every time I use the "Smart Install" option, it says
"Installation unsuccessful. Try the following steps after pressing "Close":
1. Make sure the USB isn't connected to the printer
2. Turn the printer off and on
3. Reconnect the USB to the printer"

But doing that doesn't help installing the drivers, the same pop-up just appears. I've tried every option on installing the drivers manually and selecting the version manually, but it's been taking nearly 3 hours for them to install which does not seem normal to me at all, considering my laptop is a modern machine and my internet connection is just fine.

I need help, a really detailed step-by-step thing, since I'm not sure what I can do

Hi @DanteChrist

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

Here’s a clean, step-by-step guide to fully remove and reinstall your HP LaserJet M1132 MFP drivers on Windows 11—without relying on Smart Install. This will help stop the ghost printing and resolve the failed driver installation loop.

Step 1: Disconnect and Power Cycle

  1. Unplug the USB cable from the printer and your PC.
  2. Turn off the printer, wait 10 seconds, then turn it back on.
  3. Leave it disconnected for now.

Step 2: Fully Remove Old Drivers

  1. Press Windows + R, type control printers, and press Enter.
  2. Right-click your HP LaserJet M1132 (or any ghost copies) and select Remove device.
  3. Now press Windows + R, type printui /s /t2, and press Enter.
  4. In the Print Server Properties window:
    • Look for any HP LaserJet M1132 entries under "Drivers".
    • Select each and click Remove → choose Remove driver and driver package.
  5. Press Windows + R, type devmgmt.msc, and press Enter.
    • Expand Printers and Universal Serial Bus controllers.
    • Right-click any HP LaserJet M1132 or Unknown Device entries and choose Uninstall device.
  6. Restart your PC.

Step 3: Download the Correct Driver (Not Smart Install)

  1. Go to the official HP driver page:
    HP LaserJet M1132 Driver Download
  2. Under “Driver-Product Installation Software”, download:
    • HP LaserJet Full Feature Software and Driver (not Basic or Smart Install).
  3. Save the file to your desktop.

Step 4: Install the Driver Manually

  1. Right-click the downloaded installer and choose Run as administrator.
  2. When prompted, only connect the USB cable when the installer asks.
  3. Let the installer complete. If it hangs for more than 15 minutes:
    • Cancel it.
    • Reboot.
    • Try again with antivirus temporarily disabled (some security tools block legacy USB installs).

Step 5: Disable Smart Install on the Printer (if still active)

Smart Install can interfere with proper driver setup. To disable it:

  1. On the printer’s control panel, press the Setup button (wrench icon).
  2. Navigate to Service > Smart Install.
  3. Set it to Off.

If the menu doesn’t show Smart Install, it may already be disabled or not supported in your region.

Step 6: Test Printing

  1. Open Notepad, type a few words, and go to File > Print.
  2. Select HP LaserJet M1132 and print.
  3. If it prints correctly and doesn’t repeat old jobs, you’re good to go.

If It Still Repeats Old Jobs:

  • Open C:\Windows\System32\spool\PRINTERS and delete any files inside (you may need admin rights).
  • Restart the Print Spooler service:
    • Press Windows + R, type services.msc, press Enter.
    • Find Print Spooler, right-click → Restart.

Let me know if you’d like help checking for firmware updates or if the printer still misbehaves after this clean reinstall.
