HP OfficeJet Pro 8020.. need firmware before september 2025

Hi @NeXuSBiH

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

Older firmware versions for the HP OfficeJet Pro 8020 series are not available for download once they’ve been replaced by newer releases. Only the latest firmware is provided on HP’s official support site.

  • HP only provides the latest firmware on its support pages. Once a new release is published, older versions are removed.
  • Downgrading firmware is not supported through official channels, so you won’t find pre‑September 2025 firmware available for download.
  • The best path forward is to ensure your printer is running the most current firmware and then confirm cartridge compatibility.

Note:

  • Attempting to install unofficial or modified firmware can damage the printer permanently.
  • Using cartridges that are not designed for the 8020 series may continue to trigger errors even with the latest firmware.
  • The safest option is to keep the printer on the current firmware and use compatible cartridges.

I understand you’re asking for firmware older than September 2025 for your HP OfficeJet Pro 8020 series. Before we go further, could you share a bit more about why you specifically need the older version?

  • Is the printer showing an error with certain cartridges?
  • Did the issue begin right after a firmware update?
  • Are you trying to restore compatibility with supplies that worked previously?
  • Or is there another function that stopped working after the update?

Knowing the reason will help us isolate whether the problem is truly firmware‑related or if there’s another setting, driver, or supply issue we can address together.

I print something at most four times a year, since my girlfriend is no longer in school.

Therefore, despite the age of the printer, I did not see the point in continuing to spend between €100 and €120 on printer cartridges and decided to buy refilled ones instead.

The print quality was not very good, but since, as mentioned above, I only print about four times a year and only in black and white, I no longer need high-quality cartridges.

Since the September update, the cartridges no longer work — at least the printer does not recognize them anymore. No matter what I do, different colors are detected as missing or faulty each time. Sometimes all cartridges are affected, sometimes only two or even just one. This behavior is completely random. Every time I close the printer lid, a different color appears as not working, making the printer unusable.

It would be extremely unfriendly to the environment in today’s times if you are unable to provide me with an older firmware version, as I would be forced to throw away full cartridges. If that is the case, this will have been the last time I purchased an HP printer, and I will strongly advise all friends and acquaintances against buying HP printers. As an IT professional, I am frequently asked for recommendations on hardware, and I regularly influence such purchasing decisions.

Thank you for explaining your situation clearly. On the HP OfficeJet Pro 8020 series, older firmware versions are not available once they’ve been replaced. The printer must remain on the latest firmware, and cartridge detection cannot be disabled or bypassed. The random errors you’re seeing with refilled cartridges are a result of the firmware enforcing stricter authentication.

I see that you have an issue using non-HP ink cartridges on your printer.

Please refer to the below links for more information related to your issue.

If you are using generic or non-HP ink cartridges and the above links do not help. You will have to contact the generic ink cartridge manufacturer to assist you further with it, or you will have to use genuine HP ink cartridges to resume printing.
