If you can't get an HP laser printer to work 'offline' with a USB cable, add a GENERIC PRINTER. It will work as a generic printer offline then. You will never again have to go wireless unless you want to.

Hi @Garyn70,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If you are unable to get your HP LaserJet printer (models 139-142) to work offline with a USB cable, you can add it as a generic printer. This method allows you to bypass any issues with wireless connectivity and use the printer via a direct USB connection. Here's a step-by-step guide on how to do this:

For Windows:

Connect the Printer:

  • Ensure the printer is turned on and connected to your computer via a USB cable.

Open Control Panel:

  • Go to the Start menu and type "Control Panel," then click on it to open.

Devices and Printers:

  • In the Control Panel, select "Devices and Printers."

Add a Printer:

  • Click on "Add a printer" at the top of the window.

Select Local Printer:

  • Choose "Add a local printer" and click "Next."

Choose a Printer Port:

  • Select "Use an existing port," then choose the correct USB port (e.g., USB001) from the dropdown menu. Click "Next."

Install the Printer Driver:

  • When prompted to install the printer driver, select "Generic" from the list of manufacturers.
  • Select "Generic / Text Only" from the list of printers. Click "Next."

Name Your Printer:

  • You can name your printer or leave the default name. Click "Next."

Complete the Installation:

  • Follow the remaining prompts to complete the installation. You can choose to set the printer as the default printer if desired.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
