I just set up my new printer. The setup initially worked fine, but my HP app says my printer is connected to the cloud but not the internet (even though it said it was successful when I first went through the steps). My printer keeps attempting to update the firmware. I keep getting a message saying "Update Unsuccessful. The firmware download failed. Please try again. If the problem persists, contact support." There is an "OK" button at the bottom right, but it won't let me click it. I am unable to use the printer's control panel at all. It keeps restarting the firmware update. This repeats over and over, with no success.

There are two parts to the printer connection:

  • Connect to your local network (and router)
  • Connect the printer to the Internet using Web Services

They are related but separate animals.

I admit I recognize the issue; something similar having happened to my OfficeJet Pro 9135e way back in 2024 when the printer was new.  Assigned the IP address on the router, Started the printer and Poof →  Firmware update started hammering the printer but not actually doing anything useful (like completing).  It was a mess and it took me several attempts and long minutes to regain control and fix the problem

I did not think stuck firmware on a new printer was still an issue, though what I experienced might not even be related to your setup.  At the time, I was not using any applications or printer software to connect or configure the printer.

The following might work -- the order of events depends on if / how you can regain control of the printer long enough to make changes.

Take a look -- Try / Consider whatever (if anything) makes sense in your situation.

-- What if? --

If none of it makes sense, that's OK -- let me know.

I can remove this post so someone else can answer with a more definitive "Do this" answer.

Try / Consider

If you are not doing so, consider using an assigned IP address for the printer.  The assignment is done on both the printer and your router and can be completed for either an Ethernet or Wireless connection type.  At the least, you can complete the assignment on the router's side and then continue.

Product NameHP OfficeJet Pro 8135e All-in-One Printer
Connectivity (facet)Apple AirPrint™; Ethernet networking; USB; Wireless (Wi-Fi®); Wireless direct printing; Fax
Connectivity, Std1 Ethernet; 1 Hi-Speed USB 2.0 (device); 1 Hi-Speed USB 2.0 (host); 1 Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac (dual band); 2 RJ-11 Fax/Modem port/phone line

Reset the printer --

Reset essentially means to unplug the printer while it is "ON" --

Leave the printer unplugged for at least a minute (or as long as you can stand it).

Plug the printer in and let it start.

If the printer fails to start on its own, press / release the power button to start it.

Wait for the printer to boot -- this might take between 30 to 60 seconds or longer.

The Reset might actually be enough --

if the vicious firmware update cycle is broken after the Reset, the firmware -- if it even needs an update -- might settle down and either update properly or lie quiescent.

Still wonky?

If you can get control of the printer soon enough, you might be able to Restore the Factory defaults.  Doing so might (should?) clear the awful repeating firmware update cycle.

Whether you can assign an IP address (after the Printer Reset) on the printer's side might depend on whether you can regain (or have) control over the printer enough to get into the Embedded Web Server (EWS).

EWS connects to your printer using your Browser -- no poking about on the printer's control panel.

If you can get into EWS after the Printer Reset but the printer still seems unstable, perhaps try (first) General → Restore Default Settings → Restore All Factory Defaults

Restore Default Settings → Restore All Factory Defaults wipes out "everything" on the printer, including any auxiliary setups you had previously completed.  On new printers "losing everything" is less of a thing -- restoring Factory defaults on a printer that you have spent hours configuring can be a bit more painful in terms of recovery.

If the printer can find its way back onto the network, EWS will become accessible again after the printer completes the Restore process.  If not, press the printer's power button to shut it down - wait for the printer to completely stop - press the power button to start the printer.

Find the Printer's PIN number -- make note of it

Printer - Restore Default Settings - Network / All Factory

As soon as the printer appears to connect to your network, use the Embedded Web Server (EWS) to connect to the printer from your favorite browser -- Edge might be better than Firefox for this, though both are supported.

Open your Browser

Type / enter the Printer IP address into URL / Address bar

Note → If the browser security will not let you open EWS, try a different browser.

Section General

Restore Default Settings

OR

Restore All Factory Defaults

-- Preparation -- Connect the printer to the network --

Example – EWS Setup – IPv4

EWS > HP Document / How-to (Basic format)

Use the HP printer Embedded Web Server (EWS)

NOTE:  Find printer IP address

Section Open the EWS over a local network orientation

Alternate EWS format (Select newer printers and select Laser Printers)

Open your Browser >

Type / enter the Printer IP address into URL / Address bar

Note → If the browser security will not let you open EWS, try a different browser.

Section Network > Primary Ethernet

Check / Adjust Status > IPv4

OR

Check / Adjust IP Config > IPv4
