The new app for Windows 11 is driving me crazy. I just can't get it working. I have tried everything including turning off Dark Mode. Is HP going to have a fix for this? It's unbelievable that something like this is happening. Are the Apps not tested before they're released?

It's unbelievable that something like this is happening.

True -- The HP Smart application container included a dislike of the Dark Mode setting -- it's possible that HP App suffers the same indignity.  Good idea to try switching to Light Mode.

Yes, applications are tested before release.

Perhaps something was missed in all the tests or something in your setup is not supported.

For example,

There might be something in your environment that is preventing the HP App from installing or operating as expected.

?

One possibility --

Neither HP Smart (the predecessor to HP) nor the HP App are suited to a USB-only environment.  HP Smart might have been more tolerant, though I've never had to use USB-only so I don't know whether that comment is true.

Should a full wireless environment be something you do not have, consider using Wi-Fi Direct to connect your printer to your computer.  Wi-Fi Direct uses your printer's wireless radio to connect to your wireless capable device, in this case, your Windows 11 computer.  No router.

-- Important --

Wi-Fi Direct does not support any service that requires the printer to be connected to the Internet.  Services of this type include Instant Ink, HP+ service / contract, certain Cloud services.

Installation -- and possibly operation of the HP App -- does not tolerate VPN.

Should you not wish to go any further with HP App, consider (if not done) installing the full driver printer software.  The full driver includes HP Scan.  No sign-in required.  Scroll down in this message to section:  Printer Software - Full Driver

1)  HP App >>> Download / Install - How-to, FAQ, Troubleshooting

<< Important -- 2026 >>

HP has replaced the HP Smart application with the HP App on all supported platforms.

The HP App is available at the App Store for your supported device (computer, tablet, phone)

 HP printer setup (HP app)

Read the FAQs

For example:

What are the HP app requirements?

And / or

Why do I need to sign in or create an account to use the HP app?

And / or

Why can't I connect my wireless printer or print over the network?

>>> Terms of Use >>>  HP App - Terms of Service

-- Reminders -- Initial Connection --

  • Your device (computer, tablet, phone) and printer must be connected to the same network.
  • On the mobile device, Location Services and Bluetooth should both be switched ON
  • In Windows, switch ON Network Discovery and File Sharing in your private profile
  • If using, switch OFF your VPN

-- Be Aware –

Any HP application you install should be sourced from “HP”.

What?  Fakes have been discovered on at least one App Store –

Check who is providing the application >> “HP Inc.

If you can’t tell, ask or use the Homepage method (if using Windows) to download and install the HP Smart application.

2)  HP Smart Bug -- Comments -- Solution -- HP App

The weird "offset" issue is result of a rapidly spreading bug in HP Smart.

There are screenshot examples in various posts in the Community.

         ------- For those reading -------

There is a reported Bug in the HP Smart application (Windows).

The problem has been reported to HP.

         ----------------------------------

Proposed Solution

-- Recommended -- One and more of the following --

  • Upgrade to the HP App (Introduction and information is provided later in this message).  HP App is the replacement for HP Smart.
  • ⇶  At the least -- Install the HP App as a means to kick the "Smart" bug to the side.  That means, Install the HP App > Restart the computer > Try using HP Smart and see if the mere act of installing its replacement (HP App) "fixes" the bug in HP Smart.  Sounds silly, but some folks report that this is enough if you want to keep using the old HP Smart application.

AND / OR

  • Use HP Scan (part of your full driver printer software)
  • → Model and Operating System Dependent →  Install / Use the HP Universal Scan Software (available as a separate download / install) on the drivers webpage
  • Use Windows Scan until you decide / find a solution that suits your needs

                      -- Start --

-- Details / Examples  / Troubleshooting --

HP is a wrapper that combines a Devices menu similar to HP Support Assistant with the features and options in the HP Smart application.

The HP App can be found by opening the store: Microsoft Store

Look for the HP App under the single name "HP

Make sure your choice is sourced from HP, Inc.

Consider upgrading to the HP App and perhaps abandoning HP Smart --

The HP App is the replacement for HP Smart.

-- What about HP App? --

At some point, perhaps even now, HP Smart will no longer be available in the  Microsoft Store  .

There are at least two possible consequences to this:

  • Were there a version fix for the reported HP Smart "Scan - Save - Off-Center" bug, it can be more difficult to actually obtain a fixed version of the HP Smart app.
  • Any constant request to update HP Smart is perhaps because the app cannot be updated through the conventional means.   There are caveats to that comment, none of which matter in context.
