I just opened this printer yesterday and haven't been able to get it connected properly. I've tried every solution. Cleaning the cartridges, downloading necessary drivers, hard reset.
It is still giving me the Cartridge or Account Error message.
Everything was brand new, out of package.
Could I have set this up incorrectly?

Web services are enabled as well.

Hi @mysticflora

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

Thanks for laying this out so clearly—it’s genuinely frustrating when a brand-new printer throws a “Cartridge or Account Error” right out of the box.

You’ve already taken all the right first steps, so let’s dig deeper and walk through a few targeted actions that often resolve this issue.

Step-by-Step Recovery for “Cartridge or Account Error”

1. Confirm HP Account Activation

Some HP+ or Instant Ink-enabled printers require account activation before printing.

  • Visit 123.hp.com/setup
  • Sign in with your HP account and complete the setup
  • Ensure the printer is listed under your devices
  • If prompted, accept HP+ terms (if applicable)

2. Check Cartridge Authenticity and Installation

Even new cartridges can trigger errors if not seated properly or if authentication fails.

  • Power off the printer
  • Remove all cartridges and inspect for protective tape—ensure it’s fully removed
  • Reinsert cartridges firmly until they click into place
  • Power on and check for changes

3. Reset Web Services and Reconnect

Sometimes enabling Web Services prematurely can interfere with setup.

  • Access the printer’s Embedded Web Server (EWS):
    • Type the printer’s IP address into a browser
    • Navigate to Web Services > Remove Web Services
    • Restart the printer
    • Re-enable Web Services after setup is complete

Reference: HP Web Services Troubleshooting Guide

4. Update Firmware Manually

Outdated firmware can block cartridge recognition or account sync.

5. Factory Reset the Printer

This clears any setup missteps and restores default conditions.

  • On the printer control panel, press and hold Cancel + Wireless buttons together for 5–10 seconds
  • Wait for the printer to restart
  • Reattempt setup via HP Smart or 123.hp.com

Let’s get your printer working the way it should.

SOLVED! I needed new cartridges. The ones I installed out of the box were giving the error.
