Trying to set up new hp 9025e—setup yellow cartridge not communicating with printer error.
I have:
-removed cartridge and reinserted several times
-removed all cartridges and reinserted
-removed cartridge “carrier” and cartridges and reinserted each one
-removed cartridges and, with printer on, unplugged power cord at printer end first, then power end, waited over night, and then plugged both in beginning at printer end first.
Then, tried to register new printer and product number from sticker on rear of printer and product not recognized.
Printer is not yet recognized on network because I haven’t been able to complete set up.
I am not having a good time.

Hi @dauntlesst,
Welcome to the HP Support Community!
Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding your setup cartridge!
We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.
It seems you're dealing with a frustrating issue with your HP OfficeJet Pro 9025e setup. The error with the setup yellow cartridge not communicating could be related to several factors, such as cartridge alignment, software glitches, or a printer hardware issue. Let's go step-by-step to try and resolve this issue:
Step 1: Verify Cartridge Compatibility
- Check Cartridge Model: Make sure that the yellow setup cartridge you have is the correct one for your printer model. You should be using the cartridges that came with your printer or HP compatible cartridges specifically for the 9025e series.
Step 2: Reset the Printer
- Power Cycle:
- Unplug the printer from the power outlet.
- Wait for 1–2 minutes and then plug it back in.
- Turn the printer on and check if the cartridge error is resolved.
Step 3: Clean Cartridge and Contacts
- Check for Obstructions or Damage: Carefully inspect the yellow cartridge for any visible damage or debris.
- If there is any dust or ink residue on the metal contacts of the cartridge or in the cartridge holder, gently clean it with a lint-free cloth or cotton swab.
- Do not use water; just dry cloth to prevent any moisture damage.
Step 4: Reinstall the Setup Cartridges
- Remove all cartridges from the printer, including the yellow setup cartridge.
- Inspect the cartridge carrier to make sure it’s not jammed or blocked.
- Reinstall the setup cartridges (including the yellow one) correctly and press them firmly into place. Ensure each cartridge clicks into position securely.

Step 5: Update Printer Firmware
If the printer starts but doesn't recognize the setup cartridges, try updating the firmware manually:
- Visit the HP Support website and find the latest firmware for your HP OfficeJet Pro 9025e.
- Download the firmware update to your computer and install it via USB or directly through the HP Smart app if the printer connects via USB.
Step 6: Setup on the Network
- If your printer is still not recognized by the network, ensure that the printer is in setup mode by following these steps:
- Connect your printer to your router using Wi-Fi or via an Ethernet cable.
- Use the HP Smart app on your phone or computer to attempt to reconnect the printer to your network. You may need to reset your Wi-Fi settings.
- If you encounter issues, check the printer’s display screen for any Wi-Fi setup options.
Step 7: Reset Printer to Factory Settings (if still unresolved)
- On the printer’s control panel, navigate to Settings.
- Select Printer Maintenance and choose Restore or Reset to Factory Settings.
- This will remove any existing setup and allow you to start the setup process again.
Try the steps above systematically to fix the cartridge communication issue. If your printer isn’t recognized on the network, setting up through the HP Smart app or manual firmware updates could help. Let me know how it goes, and if you need further assistance!
